Question for Bed Resters

How many times a day are you allowed up and down the steps?  My doctor told me to be on modified bed rest.  The nurse told me to avoid steps as much as possible, for example it is not okay for me to just go downstairs and throw in a load of wash. Just curious what everyone else is allowed to do.

Re: Question for Bed Resters

  • Well for me, we have steps that are on the outside. A condo up on the fourth floor. I only go up and down them on the days of my appointments once a week. I was told to avoid them but I'm on strict bed-rest however.
Nutmeg, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme... these are a few of my favorite things! Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest! We have four children; one left us too soon.

  • I was on full bedrest at home and in the hospital so there was NO  steps for me from 19weeks to 35 weeks.

Then I moved to modified when they said to just avoid steps..have people bring me up what was needed or go downstairs for the day and back up once to go to bed.

BR worked for us, be careful and be more strict on yourself than your drs are!!!

  • I live in a 3 story townhouse so avoiding stairs is very difficult. Bedroom is on the top, kitchen in the middle, and front door is on the first floor.  Dr had said I can use the stairs once per day.  Honestly, its probably more like 2-3 times a day for me. The rest of the time I am laying down- not doing laundry, dishes, sweeping etc. I just get up to eat, shower and use the bathroom.

  • our home is one story.

I stay in bed flat and get up to go to the restroom and brush my teeth, grab fluids or breakfast/lunch/snacks from the kitchen. The dogs get let out when I grab my food and I will refill their food/water at this time. I shower every other day.

  • i'm on "strict bedrest" and am allowed to use the stairs once a day.  so i only use them to go up to our bedroom at night.  then i come down in the morning when i wake up...and spend all day on the couch.  only up to pee and grap a quick meal.

  • More than I should ;)

There are so many different definitions of modified bedrest. I have 5 OB's in my office and they will all tell me different things. None of them have told me a specific amount.......they all just say "do what you need to do" and listen to your body.

I am probably not a good person to compare with because unlike many others here, I have 2 other children.....a 3.5 year old and a 15 month old. We have a lot of stairs in our house unfortunately. There are about 6 stairs from the 1st floor to our master and then there are 6 more to get to my kids playroom, bathroom and their bedrooms. There is absolutely no way for me to avoid them because unfortunately we can't afford help 24/7 and my DH works about 70 hours a week. I really try to not go up and down constantly, but I know I am using them way more than most girls. Again, I don't really have a choice. You can't lock a 3.5 year old and a 15 month old in one room all day for months, so I do what I have to do. I just go slowly.
