Just got back from a super horrible 12 week appointment

I just need to vent. What a mess.

So it's my 12 week appointment, supposed to be no big deal, listen to the heartbeat with the doppler and move on. The first thing my NP asks is where is the followup to my cyst ultrasound? Um, what? I have a cyst? This is the first I'm hearing of it. So at my 8 week ultrasound, they noted a cyst, and I was supposed to have an ultrasound at 10 weeks to see if it was gone/getting smaller, etc. Well, no one told me about it at all. Okay then.

So then it's time to check the heartbeat. NP calls in another nurse to help. After 15 minutes, they give up. The ultrasound tech is not in the office and they are not allowed to use the equipment. She tells me that she'll give it a try since she doesn't want to send me home not knowing if my baby is okay or not. Yeah, no kidding. So by now I'm crying on the table.

After 20 minutes of fiddling with the ultrasound machine, she gets a super blurry picture and points to some spot where I should see some flickering. I never see it, but I tell her I trust her since she sees these more than I do.

So I make an appt. for an ultrasound on Monday. I'm shaking and crying at the front desk and looking like a complete idiot. What a super $hitty visit. We were going to tell some friends at a party this weekend, but now I'm just not comfortable doing it.

If you made it to the end of this story, thanks for listening! I hope you all have way better 12 week appointments than me!

  • That really sucks.  If i were you i would look int ochanging practices...how could they have just forgotten to mention you had a cyst? It sounds good that they were able to see a flickering though.  Your in my thoughts that everything will be ok!

Yeah, she told me it was not in OB mode making things harder to see. Whatever lady. She said this happens (not getting a heartbeat on the doppler) "all the time." Okay then, so tell me to schedule an appt. when the ultrasound tech is available and I'll do it! Don't send me into the room and fiddle around with the machine for 20 minutes and then have me just take your word for it. Good grief.

Yeah the whole cyst thing was hard for me to even think about by the end of the appointment! What a train wreck. Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts! Hopefully I'll be able to give a positive update on Monday.

  • Oh my goodness, I think I would be a wreck! I probably would have demanded to see a Dr!

Sorry! I went on a rant there and didn't even acknowledge your hug! Thank you! DH should be on his way home soon . . . he can't get here fast enough.

The office had a bunch of reception and lab people running around, but no ultrasound tech and no dr. Honestly, if this had been my first experience with this office, I would be looking for another practice. I've liked them so far, but after this, they're on notice with me. Especially the cyst thing. I'm doing my part w/ health and appts and such, now they need to do their part and inform me of WTH is going on with my body!

  • What a disaster! I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I had an 8 week appt from hell, too. It just makes me so mad that they KNOW you are pregnant, they KNOW you are on edge because it's early.....but still can not tell you things and leave you hanging which makes it all so much worse.

I hope you have a wonderful appt on monday to make up for this shitty one!

  • I think I would have said that I was going to stay on that table until they were able to find someone who knew how to work the machine. That is ridiculous that they have put you through this. So they only have one u/s tech?

Exactly! If they don't tell me about a cyst, who will??? If they don't tell me that the doppler can't find the heartbeat "all the time" and that they often need to follow up with an ultrasound, who will??? Right now I feel like September is forever away.

On Monday I am going to get my money's worth and ask a bajillion questions, get pictures, and get some friggin answers.

The practice has 3 doctors, and no dr. was in. I don't know how many ultrasound techs they have, but none were there. WTH guys? I will gladly schedule my appt. at the same time the ultrasound tech is around, but you need to tell me these things. This is my first baby and I very obviously have no clue. Work with me people! Thanks for listening Pizza

  • To reaasure you about the cyst - before I got pregnant I had a cyst on each of my ovaries. The one on my left side was concerning enough that I had to follow up on it. And when I did, BOTH of them were completely gone. I am sure you will hear a strong little heartbeat soon!

Do it! You are paying them to provide you with health care, they need to do their job. And be sure to tell the Dr. exactly what happened, how worried you were, and how disappointed in their practice you are because they didn't tell you about the cyst.

Yeah, the news about the cyst wasn't totally shocking because I had been having sharp pains on my left side when I would cough or sneeze. I am hoping that on Monday it will just be gone. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  • So sorry you had had such a terrible appointment!  I have had a few myself this pregnancy and they really just take the wind right out of your sails.  At my last one they couldn't get the heartbeat on the doppler either but thankfully managed to get me in for an ultrasound.  The tech said the baby was moving and I had to take her word for it because it was all of a 2 second scan and I think I saw movement but who the heck knows when you're looking at those things. Hope your appt. on Monday goes much better; I will be thinking of you!
  • I am so sorry you had to deal with all of that.  I hope your appointment on Monday goes well.
  • I'm sorry that your appointment went so poorly. I hope everything goes more smoothly on Monday.

  • Oh my, what a horrible appt. I'm so sorry. Hopefully Monday comes around quickly for your u/s and some peace of mind.

  • Wow that sounds terrible - they should have definitely been WAY more prepared than that. I hope all goes well at your appointment on Monday!

  • Thanks for listening everyone! You guys are the best. DH and I had Qdoba for dinner and just relaxed and I'm feeling better now. I just need to distract myself until my Monday appointment!

  • I am also so sorry that you had such a terrible experience. Honestly, I would look for another doc. To me that's three strikes and you need a doctor that you can trust and makes you feel reassured and calmer, not more worried and stressed. I just changed doctors and ha my 12 week appt today and it was so great. I hope you can find someone that can do the same for you! <3

  • I'll keep you in my thoughts. I've had a very trying and draining past couple days after my 12 week appointment and I can completely sympathize with the frustrating appointment part and feeling a little down. *hugs your way* I've been crying on and off for the past 3 days... and now I feel like crying again (damn hormones, I love/hate you)

I have an inkling that things will be just fine for you, but it's okay to feel down a little bit.

  • OMG - that's just a terrible experience, I'm so sorry! Seriously, very unprofessional!! I don't know how you can 1) forget to follow up to inform you at your 8wk check up...2) not know how to use the U/S machine and freak you out like that. Thoughts & prayers are being sent your way.

  • Oh my goodness, I am so sorry you had to go through that ((((hugs)))) I hope that your appt on Monday comes quick and you get some great news!

  • Wow I would be so mad!!  At your U/S I would make them take an extra long time until you are fully satisfied that all looks well.  If anything like this happens again where they need to do an u/s but no one there knows how, ask them where they can refer you to that can do it right away.  My office has a center they can send me to if I need an u/s and am unavailable the days their tech is in.  They could even have you go to the hospital to get it done.  Monday isn't far away but I'm sure it feels like forever!
