Appetite & RSV

DS has been diagnosed with RSV. We are doing treatments @ home & praying he doesn't get any worse. His appetite seems to have been really effected--he normally was taking about 2.5-3oz every 3 hours & now is only taking between 1-2oz...has any one else experienced this?

Pedi wasn't concerned & said that we could offer him some pedialyte after each feeding if he doesn't drink much BM to help keep him hydrated and I know when I am sick I don't want to eat but I am just worried about my little guy.

Re: Appetite & RSV

  • Sorry I don't have any experience with that but I just wanted to say I hope your LO feels better soon Sad I would assume the apetite decrease is normal though.

  • My DS was also diagnosed yesterday. His appetite does seem affected too.  My Pedi said this is normal and to try to feed him smaller amounts more frequently. Hope this helps! GL & hope your LO feels better soon!

  • Thanks. Hope yours does too!

  • My son was diagnosed with this when he was 2 weeks. Pedi told me as long as I was still having messy diapers he was okay. He did not end up getting worse and we thankfully avoided the hospital. Although for his checkups he was not on point with his weight gain. They monitered him weekly and now he is in the 60%. And doing much better.

    Goooodluck to you!

ps. I kept a warm vaporizer going 24/7 and it seemed to help him.

  • DD just had it, she was drinking 4-5 oz every 4 hours dropped to 1-2 oz only when I force fed her. I set an alarm to make sure she ate at least every 4 hours. After a couple of days I tried to feed her every 2 hours except at night because she was getting too dehydrated for my comfort. Shee did much better if I tried after a decent nap, and during the day I had her nap in carseat to help breathing.  Dr told me the Albuterol treatments(if that is what you are doing) isn't what is helping, It is the moisture from the treatments that is helping. She gave us saline for nebulizers which helped. We also ran vaporizer around the clock, and several times a day before a feeding I would take her into the shower with me for the warm moist air. When I did this it was the best feedings of the day and it helped her cough.  We also got to a point that she wouldn't eat even 1 oz, we gave her pedilyte and she drank 3 oz with little encouragement.  We kept her on pedilyte for few days because she started vomiting formula and mucous everywhere (sorry TMI)  I hope you DS feels better soon.  It will get better with time.
