Took my first glucose test at home today..

Just saw the Diabetic c. Today so i just got my test strip kit and took my bs after lunch it was 156. Holy crap!!. LOL!!! I suck! I stayed within range of my carbs suppose to have 45-60 and had 46??

I guess this is all trial and error? To see what works?

I'm lost. I see the nutritionist on Tuesday. hopefully that will shed some light..heres what I had for lunch

1/2 cup chicken salad

2 slice pumpernickle bread

7 baby carrots

cucmber

1oz of Pirate's booty

Not the right carbs? I measured everything too..huh

Re: Took my first glucose test at home today..

  • Were you active after eating? I try to do at least 15-20 minutes of walking after eating to help bring my levels down. If I don't walk or don't do enough walking, my numbers end up above the cutoff.  Good luck!

  • I am by no means seasoned at this, I"m just starting my second week testing and am on insulin already.  Today is my first full day on that.  However, I'm not sure what Pirate's booty is but, it looks like you don't have nearly enough protein.  The dietician suggested I should for 25-30 g of protein at each meal.  I don't imagine you 1/2 cup of chicken salad gave that to you (since it's not all chicken).

Also, the bread may have caught you up.  I have a lot of trouble with bread but it might be beneficial to stick to like a 12 grain variety like Arnold's.

It's a lot of trial and error.  Good Luck!

  • My guess is the bread.  Did you have a clean finger?  I caught my numbers being significantly higher if I hadn't washed my hands prior.

It's definately a trial and error thing w/ the food.  Good times!  Goodluck!

  • also one thing you should try doing is looking up which veggies are lower in starch, carrots are actually a high starch veg, so if you eat them that may be giving you a problem. I would also try the 12 grain from arnold (this works well for me) and like the pp said, add more protein. and always check your portioning. =) good luck!

  • My guess is its the bread and the carrots- and definitely add more protein!!  I get those individually wrapped cheddar cheese to add to a meal for a little extra.

This! I have to stay away from carrots, they kill my blood sugars. A lot of it is trial and error, you'll get the hang on it! And be sure any carb you eat is a complex carb.

  • Oh that bread wouldn't have worked for me.   Heck, even some of the low carb wraps or bread that DH buys doesn't work, so I have to stick to the same brand just to play it safe for now.  When I feel like I have too many carbs, I always top off my meal with a string cheese!  :)

  • You will also get more bang for your bread "buck", so to speak, if you eat the high-fibre varieties.  Grams of fibre can be deducted from the usable carb count (or at least they can for non-pregnant diabetics - you might want to check with your own nutritionist).

  • The other girls have given you some awesome advice. I just want to add that you should try not to stress yourself out too much the first week if you have a random high number or two. I stressed myself out so much for the first few weeks when my numbers were high even after following all the direction set out from my dietician. Stress can increase your blood sugar as well!

In the end it's a lot of trial and error. It took me almost a month of figuring out what foods I can and cannot eat, and and what times of day I could eat them.
