Working Moms

Lost?pls help....kinda long

Dont knw where 2 start.. so sorry if its confusing....

1. I moved frm Indianapolis to Noblesville bc of alot of reasons but that now makes my drive to work 45min- 1 hr. (weather and traffic permitting)

2. I got hired on at my externship after i graduated college. So i will be here a yr in june. i am due in Aug

2. they do not offer benifits, so therefore i will not recieve any maternity leave or anything while off work after the baby.

4. They are so awsome here and your health and children are 1st no matter what. i never get questioned when i call in or come in late, i have missed atleast 1 day a week the past 3-4 weeks FOR MANY REASONS. If i was working anywhere else i knw i would of been let go.

I am stuck bc i really need to find a job closer to home but yet i am scared that if i put in my two weeks notice that i wont be able to get a job bc i am pregnant and will need time off starting in Aug. Plus i dont want to do work somewhere that i am not using what i went to college for. I can do it from home it just finding someone to hire me to work from home.

Plus i know that i can take off 6-7 weeks and still be guarnteed a job here! so what would you do??

  • Why would you put in 2 weeks notice without having another job already lined up?

  • DO NOT quit your job until you have another job lined up. And honestly, a 45 minute commute, which not the best, isn't that bad since your job has a lot of flexibility going for it in terms of calling out.  And you are right, anywhere else and you would have been written up by now probably unless you have a lot of PTO you are using.

Why not propose working at home 1 day a week for 3 months as a 'trial' and then increase it later if they let you.  Very few companies offer paid maternity leave anyway, so don't go looking for that. It's usually just STD pay you receive.

  • I do not plan on quitting until i have another job lined up but we are in a finacial situation and are soon going to only have one vehicle. Plus the gas is outragus.

its just hard bc the hubs is down my back constantly about getting a job closer to home. I dont get sick days or PTO so its hard to tke time to look for a job. I have tried getting them to let me work frm home but its not going to happen just yet.

    Thanks ladies

  • It is daunting looking for another job while working!

First, spend one hour every other evening applying or looking for jobs.  That means that 3-4 hours a week.  See if that yields any interviews.  If not, you'll probably have to step it up a notch or start using your contact/prof list to ask about openings.

Second, try to live on just your DH's salary.  If you are able put every penny into savings from your job (aside from maybe 1/2 your gas costs), then maybe you have a chance to worry less about finding a job so quickly and you might be able to leave when you have the baby and then take 2-3 months to find a job after the pregnancy.

Last - hang in there.  It's hard to change when things seem mostly good, but I bet you could find something closer that will provide PTO/benefits etc.

  • Honestly, if you can find a job closer to home, then take it, if you have to work.  It doesn't sound like you are in a position to be picky about whether or not it is in the field you went to college for.

  • It's hard without knowing specifics, but MANY people work outside the field of what they went to college for, and that's not always a bad thing. My career now is somewhat related, but not directly, to what I have my masters in.

If you are in a financial position that you are having to watch gas and drop a car, then take what you can get BUT don't make a move until you have something. You are young (I'm assuming since it sounds like you just graduated last year)...you have a LONG time to worry about getting back into a field later if need be.   I agree with the other poster, look at night and on weekends and be creative about interviewing when the time comes.  I've changed jobs many times over the years and you can do it even without PTO.

And honestly, your DH needs to realize you HAVE a job and are looking but jobs don't just pop up out of thin air.  Just keep looking and you'll find something.

  • 45 minutes is nothing for a good job. If they are flexible then that is worth something. Anyway you can stay with them and get better PTO benefits or more money or a flexible schedule? I commute 1.5 hours so 45 min is my halfway point. But it is worth it for me because I am vested in the company and have lots of benefits. Happiness with work trumps working in the field you studied to me.
  • From first hand experience: THE GRASS ISN'T ALWAYS GREENER! I left my job that like yours is very flexible, family and health comes first I started working here at 32 weeks preggo and they never blinked an eye when I asked to stay out 8 weeks instead of our original 6. They let me start back part time and never quabble when I need to leave early or come in late becuase of my daughter. I left for 7 months for "better hours and pay" I begged them to let me back and am so grateful they did. I have a 45 min commute and would commute an hour and a half to still work here. Think it through.
  • Yes it is alot to think about.

Just sucks bc i have NO benifits at all NO Health coverage! The company is to small so they do not offer it!! I cant afford to live off my husbands income alone. So i basically have no choice but to work as long as i can.

I think will just talk to my boss about a raise and possible starting to work from home just a few days to prove to them i can do it! The worse thing is they can tell me no!! I know i am 24 and still have time ahead of me to work in the field i went to school for its jsut depressing this is the lowest me and y family have ever been and i cant afford any bad things to happen right now!!

I really appriciate everyones opinions, i dont have many people to talk to at home so this is my way of talking to peolpe and venting!! THANKS again!!

Oh honey.  If this is the worse things ever get for you, thank your lucky stars.  As PP have said, keep looking for work elsewhere.  Or, how about the husband looking for a job closer to your work and you all moving closer to where your job is.  Does his employer offer benefits?  Could he put you on his insurance?  I wonder why all this is on you to make the changes when your career (because it is in your field so you are starting your career) is so flexible and willing to work with you.

  • What type of job does your husband have?  Do they not offer health insurance?  What's stopping him from picking up a second part-time job if you two are in such dire financial straits?

  • Even if you find a GREAT job close to home, you still won't get the PTO after the baby comes b/c of FMLA (or atl east you won't be guaranteed) and then you might be stuck at a job that isn't even one you like.  Stick it out.

Your husband can just bite it.  He could get a 2nd job or something at Home Depot or S-bux and get some health care.  45 minutes isn't exactly a horrible commute.  It's not great but it's certainly do-able.
