Snarky and T-TTC

Re: ocw

  • Hey! I lurk more than I post bc I'm on my phone most of the time since our internet is monitored.

I had my ivf consult yesterday.  I'm going on Lupron, apparently.  On CD21 or thereabouts, a week after I O next cycle.

He didn't mention ganirelix.  He said with slower responders and with people with less AFC than me, he may have done a different medication. But he said 225iu of gonal-f to start (and he mentioned some other things he told me not to worry about like estrogen patches, antibiotics, steroids, etc.).  And he said he expected based on my historical day 3 AFC that he thinks he can get 20 eggs from me.  Says he shoots for 10-20 ideally, but doesn't think that will be an issue.

I asked about whether we should do the 3-cycle package or pay as we go, and he said "you won't need 3 fresh ivf cycles, if you do, I would be surprised.  But I cannot promise anything."  Said that based on my b/w and etc, he thinks there would be at least a few frozen embryos in case the fresh cycle didn't work.
And I hate that I did this, but I cried.  At a certain point, I said "this is just so hard.  It is so unfair.  We're good people, we don't deserve this."  And then I couldn't really talk for a minute.  And then I said through my tears "Dr. A please tell me you are going to get us pregnant."  And he said "Diane, I will get you there."    <------ insert crying emoticon here.

I also asked whether my faulty medication administration was the cause of this iui fail.  He said likely not.  He also said that if money were not at all an issue and insurance were covering everything, he'd like to see me do 2 or 3 more injectible IUIs since we have no real dx and thinks we'd be successful without ivf.  But that he understands that in the course of 2 or 3 injectible IUIs, since we are OOP, that that would mean we could do IVF instead.  And he said if he had a choice between 2 or 3 injectible IUIs and 1 ivf, he would choose the ivf.  But that in the end it is me and H's decision to make, not his.

I asked what are the success rates for my age group, wdyt?  He said generally, for 2009 it was a little over 50%.  I said "that's it?"  He said, you have to remember that in that group, there are a lot of women in your age group that have high FSH, are DOR, or have male sperm problems, etc which isn't your case.  So I think you have a favorable chance.  And I wouldn't tell you that if it weren't true.

So overall, it wasn't that I really learned more about the ivf process.  I think it was more for me to talk to him about what he thought about our specific case.  I feel kind of encouraged by it.

  • Sounds good! But please please please take care of yourself. I just read yesterday that it takes 5 MONTHS for an egg to develop, so I am now completely off booze, sugar, etc. and making sure I continue to eat healthy, take my vitamins every day, etc. to try and maximize my egg health.

  • I know.  I told him about my occasional smoke and drinking.  He said he doesn't mind moderate drinking, and says I should definitely stop even casual smokes.
