Polyhydramnios??

Hi ladies,

I've never posted on this board but am hoping there might be someone here that can alleviate some of my concerns.

Last week at my weekly ultrasound (I have PIH so get weekly growth scans) they diagnosed me with polyhydramnios.  My fluid level is at 30.  Has anyone here been diagnosed with this?  If so, at what level did your doctor tell you they wouldn't allow you to go into labor on your own?  I don't have another dr. appointment until Monday and the dr. there told me she didn't know - but that most PHA babies are induced early b/c they don't want the waters to break on their own for fear of placental abruption or cord prolapse.

Also, what week were you diagnosed?  Did your dr. give you any idea if there were things you could do to stop the extra fluid build up?  Mine is idiopathic - they don't know the cause.

Thanks!

I was diagnosed with polyhydramnios and PIH around 32 weeks. I was placed on Procardia and sent home on complete bed rest. Up until this week, I had to go to two NST's per week, with a weekly growth ultrasound. However, it appears that my OB has different views than yours. Mine does not participate in inductions until you reach week 39, no matter what the fluid level is. One option for fluid reduction is to have an amniocentesis. Mine is also idiopathic, and I will be 38 weeks tomorrow. Not sure if this helped or contained useful information for you?

  • Thanks - yes that's helpful.  I am just curious if other OBs induce or let you go full term.  You and I are about the same gestation... I've been on bedrest off and on since around the same time, but the PHA just showed up last week.  That's when I had my first NST.

    Thanks again!

  • I was diagnosed with Polyhydraminos at 30 weeks.  I am having an amnio today at the MFM/Peri to remove excess fluid and to check for lung maturity.  If her lungs are mature, she is being delivered (by C section) next week.  My fluid level was 29 a week ago yesterday but they are expecting it to be well over 35 today...I was seen/measured by my regular OB yesterday.

Don't let this freak you out, the main reason she is coming early and by C/S has to do with complications from my kidney stent (that has been in since 30 weeks).

  • I was diagnosed around 32 weeks. I don't know what my AFI was; I didn't know to ask. I was measuring 42 weeks at 35 weeks. There was no talk of delivering early because of it. However, I also had GD and there was talk of not letting me go to 39 weeks because of THAT.

I was scheduled to have an amnio done at 36 weeks to reduce some of the fluid, but never made it that far ... my water broke 35w5d and he was born the same day.

I immediately went to L&D and was terrified of cord prolapse, but it never happened, thank god.

    GL! It's uncomfortable and scary.

(I will also say that if your water breaks on its own, be prepared for Niagara Falls. Not only does it break, but it continues to gush out of you with every contraction or step you take. I literally soaked three bath towels before I even left my house.)

  • I had this and was diagnosed around 36 weeks- mine was likely caused by GD. My MW was very unconcerned about it, but I googled and scared myself. She did not give me any ideas to fix it- my GD was already well controlled so there wasn't really anything else I could do. I did have weekly NSTs until I delivered to make sure the baby was still doing well, and all of them were fine. I was a scheduled c/s before any of this, and it was scheduled at 39 weeks.  Everything ended up perfectly fine with a wonderfully healthy baby- after all of my needless worry. I have heard the later the diagnosis, the better.  Good luck- try not to worry too much!
