Trying to Get Pregnant

Antibiotics and alcohol (NTTGPR)

I just started Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for my ridiculous pizza face, or acne whatever.  Anyway I'm sure everyone's heard the "don't drink alcohol when you're on antibiotics" but I've known plenty of people to do so without any problems.  Anyway being biology minded I wanted to look up how the antibiotic works- turns out it blocks folic acid absorption by bacteria... guess that's why I have to stop taking it if I get KU during this time- anyway and found a much more strong warning about this particular drug.  MH and I usually have a few drinks on the weekend.  I'll probably just avoid alcohol, but since I avoid it during the 2WW I like to have wine while waiting to O and I'll be on this med for at least 2 months unless it clears up before then.  I was just curious if anyone has taken Bactrim and observed effects when mixing with alcohol.

  • if you are concerned, you should speak to your doctor.  S/he can change to a different  medication.

  • Right.  I probably will just avoid alcohol for the time that I'm actually taking it.  I was just wondering if there was anyone else who had taken it and decided to drink alcohol anyway or didn't know the risk to avoid it in the first place.  Actually, the bottle doesn't even have an avoid alcohol sticker on it.  Weird.

Randomly purple, I've always wanted to go to St. Maarten!  We ended up going to Grenada for our honeymoon.

  • I would be more concerned about the meds interfering with the folate absorption.  I would tell your doctor that your are TTC and would like a med that is safe.  You don't want to be folate deficient.  It take the body a long time to build its folate stores

On a side note SXM is awesome!  It was nicer 8-9 years ago when there was less development.  If you ever get to go you should you will love it!

  • Good point.  I tried to find the mechanism of action and it looks like it just blocks certain bacteria from synthesizing their own folic acid or absorbing yours so the bacteria can't replicate.  I told him I was ttc and that's why he chose this one.

We found a house that we wanted to rent for our honeymoon there but it wound up being booked during that time :(   In all my research of the island I decided I wanted to stay in a less populated place on the island but that I did want to venture over to the runway and watch the planes landing almost on the runway!

  • Septra/Bactrim works specifically in bacteria. One portion (sulfamethoxazole) inhibits a pre-cursor for the pathway and trimethoprim inhibits an enzyme in the folic acid synthesis pathway in bacteria. It will not affect your folic acid levels. SMP/TMP is believed to be safe up to the 3rd trimester; however, most try to avoid it at all during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. SMP/TMX can make you react badly to/be sick from alcohol. This does not happen to everyone, and you can try drinking if you like; however, you still need to be careful how much you drink because there is a risk of hepatotoxicity with this medication. In addition, be sure to drink a full glass of water with each dose & wear sunscreen.

Lol, I was wondering if you were in a medically related field.  Thanks for the info.

*I drink water like a camel, so I'm good on that front!
