airplanes + a kiddo seat?

sprout will be taking her first airplane trip here soon, and we're debating buying her a ticket.

DH is convinced there is no way she'll roll with a 2 hour flight in our laps. i don't think it would be easy, but i don't know about undoable. keep in mind: we'd be entertaining her without the assistance of A/V equipment ;)

still, the tickets are crazy expensive, and it would be a big thing to get her that 3rd seat. WDYT?

  • I vote lap, but that may be because DD would never sit next to me in her car seat for that long anyway.  She would want me to hold her, and then I'd have the extra seat for nothing.  Besides, when we've flown with DD we've always checked the car seat because they will check it for free and you can cram lots of stuff in the car seat bag (like our coats, extra pillow, whatever).

    that's a good tip!

hmmm, i don't think we have a bag that will fit her car seat... i'll have to look into that either way.

  • We fly all the time with our son, including internationally, and stopped having him as a lap baby around 12 months. It is infinitely safer to have them in their own seat, and at her age I wouldn't expect her to sit in your lap for 2 hours.

  • We took DS on his second flight about 2 months ago.  We did not get him a seat.  It was a 4.5 hour flight and he was great.  He slept half of the flight out and then played with the little toys we had.  He was awake the entire return trip and was very amused by the plane, magazines, toys, etc.  We brought our portable DVD player but we didn't use it either time.  I would definitely not pay the money for a 2 hour flight.
  • After a year, I get my kids a seat unless it's a crazy short flight (Like, 1.5 hours or less).

I have big kids and they travel very well in their carseats.

  • they'll both be daytime flights when she's not likely to sleep.

she's not a fan of her carseat tho. she's RF in the car, so maybe it will be a different thing completely buckled in FF in an airplane seat next to us.

andrea922: the safety consideration is a good one. thanks for that reminder.

  • Call the airline and ask how full that route usually is. Airlines are really good in making sure you have an extra seat if available. I have often gotten a free seat next to me.

This. We just did a 1.5 hour plane ride, and she did far better in my lap than she ever would have done in her seat. Also, if it's you + someone else + LO, check the plane layout too. I seriously considered buying her a seat, but when I looked at the plane configuration online I realized that it was a plane with only 2 seats/row on each side of the aisle...meaning that if I bought DD a seat, only one of use would be able to sit next to her and the other one would have to sit in another row. It was more valuable to me to have DH's help all flight than to have the extra seat.

And yes, I know safety is an issue, but realistically I wouldn't have been able to keep her in the car seat the entire time "in case something happened" anyway.
