2nd Time workingmoms - Breast Pump Question

I will hopefully be exclusively bf-ing and want to be able to pump for the times during the day that LO will not be with me.  I have done some research and found some pumps that I like but don't know if I REALLY need a double pump.

Any advice?  I teach, so my hours aren't bad BUT I have a 45 minute commute each way.  DH is leaning towards the double because he thinks I already don't have enough free time (he's probably right!) so he wants to make sure that pumping is quick and efficient.

What do you think, single or double?

Thanks!

Re: 2nd Time workingmoms - Breast Pump Question

  • A double pump is so, so, so much better.  Pumping is not fun.  So a double pump and a hands free pumping bra mean that you can still grade papers, read a book, etc while pumping because you will have both hands.

  • I too vote for the double pump.  I teach at a college and have an hour commute each way so we have similar situations.  With DD it just made things easier.  Set it up once, get them attached, and you're done.  Is it do-able with a single?  I'm guessing yes.  Still, I'd suggest the double since it will get things done a bit faster :)
  • I'm sure I'll be in the minority here, but I liked my single pump a lot.  I was also teaching, and I guess if I had a hands free pump/bra I may have felt differently, but I liked my single pump because I always had one hand free to eat my lunch, reply to emails, grade papers, etc while pumping since I pumped at lunch at my desk.  I would pump about 13 mins on each side.  I had a Medela Swing, as did two other teachers at my school, and we all loved it.
  • Double pump...no question. There were busy days at work where I could barely spare the 15-20 minutes it took me with the double pump. I can't imagine having to spend double the time to pump each side.  I also pumped in the middle of the night for awhile once DS dropped to less nighttime feedings (to build up a fridge stash) & again, less time pumping is less sleep lost.

Edited to add that even without a hands free bra I was able to pump into the tall bottles, prop them on my thighs (leaning forward a little), use my left arm over both attachments & have one hand free to turn pages of a book or whatever. Sounds more complicated than it was. Anyway, it's doable, but I might look into a hands free bra this time...especially for home use when I might needs my hands free if DS needs help with something.

  • Thank you SO much ladies!!  Looks like double pump it is!  The nice thing is we can use our health flex pay to pay for it AND breast pumps are now tax deductible.  Yay!  Smile

Just make sure to invest in the hands free pumping bra.  It will make pumping so much more bearable

  • double pump definitely! i had a single the first time around and my bewbs took forever to pump - like 20 mins each. it sucked. it would have been much better to hook them both up once and been done. of course i've known other people who it only took 10 mins each side, so you can never tell. but i will be buying a new double one this time.

  • I definately recommend a double. Especially if you are pumping during work breaks or on the comute. I got a double as a gift and can't imagine trying to do it one breast at a time. I actually had a few friends who I recommended my pump too, becuase they had a single and hated it. I got the First Years Double miPump and it worked great. I heard that some of the more higher end ones were a little quieter and had more options, but it worked great. I hope it works for this time around too.

  • I also teach and I could not imagine trying to use a single pump. I pumped during 2 preps/lunch a day for 30 minutes each time. My commute was also 45 minutes. I HIGHLY recommend a double pump. I used the Medela Freestyle and really liked it, but it was the only one I ever tried so I had nothing to compare it to. Another mama at school had a regular double electric for her first and had the Freestyle the second time. She said she has no idea how she got anything done with the old one, but the Freestyle was a God send. Hope this helps some!

I agree. Seriously the best invention ever. Here's to bumping and pumping simultaneously.
