Lack of breast change during pregnancy

Hello BFers! Hoping to be active on this board with you in the months to come!

I have a concern that I wanted to run by you.  Since getting my BFP, I have had no changes in my breasts (size, nipple colour, soreness, tingling, etc).  I know it's still really early (7 weeks), but could this possibly be a sign of future BF problems? Did anyone not experience any breast changes in pregnancy and still successfully BF?

I've always thought there was something "wrong" with my breasts.  They stopped developing at age 11.  I'm a AA and it is the only part of me that's petite.  Even with weight fluctuations of up to 40 lbs during my adult life, my breast size has never, ever changed.  Even when PMSing I've never noticed any change in my breasts.

I really want to BF so I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me.  I know breast size has nothing to do with success at BF, but I'm wondering if no breast changes during pregnancy possibly could.

Re: Lack of breast change during pregnancy

  • My breasts did not change at all during pregnancy either. I wore the same bras and everything.

Once I had DS and my milk came in they went up a size so I had to quick run to the store and get bras because I wasn't prepared.

I have had no trouble BF so I don't think it's cause for concern.

I was worried too because everyone was talking about how big their breasts got when they were pregnant and mine were not doing anything!

  • 7 weeks is very early to expect any change. You'll probably notice changes as you get further along. And even if you don't, it's not an indicator of a problem. My friend didn't have any changes and she ended up with so much milk, she was able to donate a ton to a milk bank. I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to do some reading up on bf'ing, www.kellymom.com is a great resource.

  • First of all, congrats and good for you for wanting to BF!

My breasts didn't change at all through pregnancy, but after DS was born I had more milk than he knew what to do with!  Don't worry if your breasts don't change.  Also, don't worry about their size, small breasts can feed a baby just as well as big ones!

Keep on reading about BF so you're super prepared when your LO is born!  I'd recommend the LLL book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.

Enjoy your pregnancy, before you know it your LO will be here!

  • As you stated, you are only 7 weeks.

My breasts didn't change that much during PG, they just became more full. As far as the aureolas changing color that did not happen for me well into mid PG and it seemed to happen overnight almost.

Even without huge changes in my breasts my milk still came in fairly quickly. Also, do not stress over if you do not leak during PG. I leaked for only two nights from one breast. Size and leaking does not equal breastfeeding success.

  • Thanks for the feedback, info and encouragement!  I'll try my best not to worry about this.

I already have The Womanly Art downloaded onto my kindle, and I'll be sure to check out that web site.

  • I wouldn't worry.  I'm also a sub-A and had no real changes during pregnancy - no soreness and just barely grew in late 3rd tri.  Never leaked either.  My milk came in like gang busters and I had a strong supply throughout (nursed for 2 years).  Even itty bittys can rock it ;-)
  • I changed a total of 2 sizes during pregnancy. I was up a size around 2nd tri and up another size near the end of 3rd tri. I never leaked and I have had over supply issues with breastfeeding. So breast changes aren't really much of an indicator IMHO about breast feeding success.

  • The only change I had during pregnancy was the areola got a bit darker and seemed to cover more area, but I didn't change bra size at all. After my milk came in, I only went up one cup size. I've been BFing with no issues! (Well, no issues related to supply at least...)

Ditto. Did not buy any new bras until my last month of pregnancy...went straight into nursing bras.
