Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Anyone else have a 14 month old NOT walking?

Just wondering if anyone else is in the same situation.

Re: Anyone else have a 14 month old NOT walking?

  • Just about... she'll be 14 months on 3/6, and she won't walk. She will hold on to things and walk around (like the furniture), she hates her walking toy, she will walk holding on to my fingers (but not DH's)- for a few steps... she doesn't want to walk. And since all of my friends have kids younger than her, and they're all walking and running (and have been for MONTHS)... I feel like a failure.

  • ELPB I am in the almost same situation as you.  He can pull himself up on furniture and walk around it with no problem but has no interest in letting go.  He drops to the ground and crawls to get to where he wants to go.  Sometimes he doesn't want to walk and when we try he throws a fit.  He just wants to crawl.

  • Yup, we had another dramatic episode last night when DH was trying to get her to hold his hands and walk around. She just won't do it- no interest what-so-ever. And I know the whole "sometimes it takes babies up to 18 months to start walking" thing, but seriously, I am tired of crying because she won't hit this milestone. I get embarassed every time someone says, "so she's running around like crazy now?' or something similar to that. And I'm tired of being jealous of mom's with 11-month olds who are running around on their own. UGH!
  • My DS didn't walk until the day before he turned 15 months.   I didn't walk until I was 17 months and my DH was 18 months.  Your LO will get there... though I understand your pain.  My issue was it LITERALLY HURT to carry my DS on my hip.

  • Try not to stress.  One of my girls started walking at 14 mths and the other didnt start walking until 16 mths.

  • DD literally JUST started walking. She'd been pulling up on furniture and cruising forever and I kept thinking "oh, just around the corner", but nope. Then right before Christmas she started standing in the middle of the room and taking steps and I thought "oh, just around the corner", but nope. And then last week, when I was convinced she would never walk she got up, walked, and hasn't stopped- she now refuses to crawl.

It will happen. It's so irritating when people keep asking about it but just remind them that all healthy kids will walk eventually. DD was so busy working on her fine motor skills that she just didn't have time to practice gross motor things- it's been that way since birth.

  • DS will be 14 months in a few days and he stubbornly refuses to walk.  He's been cruising along furniture forever and will stand on his own and take a few steps but most of the time he wants to either crawl or use his walker.  I think he's way too addicted to his little walker toy.  He pushes it all over the house and can go so fast.  So I think he doesn't see the need to walk because he can get wherever he's going fast enough that way or by crawling.  I think the toy might mysteriously disappear tonight.  I really want him walking in the next month!

On the other hand, it is nice that he still seems like a baby to me and not like a toddler, so I can still pretend that he's not as old as he is!

  • My daughter isn't walking either and it's very frustrating. She does enjoy walking holding onto anyone's hands and she will walk with her push toys, but she's only recently started cruising (holding onto furniture/stationary objects). I can get her to take 3-8 independent steps, if I stand her up, get her stable and then let her go, but after a few steps she'll drop to her knees and crawl. She's only been doing this for about 2-3 weeks, before this she wouldn't even continue to stand when I let go of her hands. It's hard because I walked at 9 months, but my DH didn't walk till he was 15/16 months, so we have both sides of spectrum in our house.

However, my daughter does have 15-18 words, she's extremely vocal, seems to understand a lot of commands and knows 10 different body parts. So, in that aspect she's ahead of the game.

It drives me nuts when people assume she can walk or act like there's something wrong with her, because she can't walk. It also bugs me to hear, "Oh, she's taken a few steps? She'll be running in no time!" because it's not true. I think we're still a long way away from her "running."

I have a question for you ladies. Does your child seem to be pretty cautious when it comes to most physical activities?

Nope... she climbs on the dog and bounces on him like a horse, she tries to flip over the side of the couch, she cracks up when DH flips her all around and throws her in the air (and he is NOT a gentle giant with her)...

  • DD is 17 months and not walking. she cruises everywhere, will take a few steps, is starting to stand without holding onto anything, but still no walking.

Me too! DD doesn't really even crawl she just rolls. She doesn't pull up but does cruise the furniture now if we stand her up. My standard answer to anyone who makes a walking related comment is "she's working on it".

  • DD walked "for real" (10+ steps) at 15 months and 3 days old. Previously, she'd take no more than 1-2 steps at a time, and always crawled or held on to furniture while walking.

  • Totally.  LO totally REFUSED to walk on her own until 16 months at least, but now she's practically running. She got over the wobbles super fast.

  • DS cruises on furinture and has been for MONTHS!!! he walks behind a push toy, walks holding on your fingers and if you let go, he looks at you and then sits down, it is very frustraing but I try not to let it get to me....I too have several friends with younger walking kids...

on a positive note, my kid has about 6 words or so that you can understand fairly easily and the pediatrican says kids generally develop verbal skills or gross motor first and their brain is so busy it can only focus on one....

  • DD started walking @ 15 mos 2 days. Now we can't catch her and I am wondering why I was so eager for her to walk! It is nice that she will no longer scuff the tops of her shoes and the knees of her pants though.
