what's your first tri workout like?

I was wondering what everyone else is doing during first tri? I have been cross country skiing on weekends, the elliptical/running  for 30 minutes at the gym and some yoga. I'm feeling really tired today after skiing yesterday so I am wondering if this is too much. Anyone have a routine down that does not make them feel too tired?

Re: what's your first tri workout like?

  • Odds are you'll be tired if you work out, but you'll be tired if you don't work out. It's normal to just be tired in first tri - I had to back my bedtime back by 30-60 minutes just to get by.

I kept my workouts as much the same as I could. I did find myself getting winded much easier by cardio. I continued my weight lifting, yoga, and swimming. I walked (but I didn't run pre-pg) and rode the recumbent bike. I'm still doing those things, modifying where necessary on the free weights, but trying hard to keep going and keep challenging myself.

  • I continued my workout in my first trimester--spinning, running and weight training.  I'm now in my third tri and I stopped running (just because it was uncomfortable) at 6 months and I'm doing elliptical, spinning and still weight training/pilates.

I think you'll naturally reduce your work out intensity--you just won't physically be able to do the same workout before you were pregnant.

  • I kept my normal workout routine - daily running and abs, and weights a few times a week. I did that with DD too until I went into labor.

  • I cut way back on intensity during first tri when it came to weights and once I started with the nausea/throwing up stuff, I took almost 5 weeks off completely from working out. Since I've been feeling better, I've been back doing elliptical and weights and am about to get back into running since it is getting warmer outside here. I was easily exhausted by simple workouts in first tri but definitely got that energy back in second tri and have been able to increase my weights again and work out longer.
  • i was really tired my first tri... but I pushed my self to keep up my same routine throughout and before you know it your energy will pick back up in the 2nd tri.  I am still continuing my work-outs as usual.. the only change has been abs obviously... I have kept up all other strength training as I did before and I really feel it has helped me maintain great health this entire pregnancy...  You will still go through spurts of exhaustion... but I promise they just come and go... take it easy on the days you are super tired, but try and least go for a walk or something to keep your self motivated!
  • I was doing the same things I did before getting pregnant. I actually had my best ever 5k time during my 1st tri.

  • I have been walking, weight training, and Turbo Kick (kickboxing class).  This past week I have been having a heck of a time due to m/s and nausea.  I hope to get back into my routine ASAP.

  • by about 8 weeks mine was getting out of bed in the am.  first tri KNOCKED ME OUT!  by second tri i was back to my old routine just without any of the hard core core stuff and high impact stuff.
