Acceptable form of punishment?

I was watching Dr Phil (only for the fact it come on after GMA) and they showed a video of a mother punishing her 7 year old son with hot sauce and cold showers. Apparently 1/3 of people found this to be an acceptable form of punishment.

What do you think? Would you ever give your child hot sauce?

  • No, that's ridiculous.

  • That is just one of the saddest things I've seen

I saw another one where they "punished" a toddler by taping his sippy cup just out of his reach up on the wall

But, truthfully, my mom pulled some stuff like that to us

  • WTF is wrong with people? No I would not do that ever.

  • Ummm no. Someone should hold her down and feed her out sauce.

  • No, not at all.  I also wouldn't use soap.
  • I cried through the show, that poor little boy had enough thrown at him in his short life as it is. To be treated that way by the person who is supposed to protect you just makes me sick and angry.

And why did he get hot sauce? He didn't tell mom that he had been in trouble at school that day because he knew he would be punished! Mom went on to say that she had "tried everything," before resorting to hot sauce. I just shook my head in disgust.

The only time I would EVER give my child hot sauce is if he asked for it with his food - then I would have a huge glass of water ready and waiting.

  • What was she doing with the hot sauce?  I've heard about this but not the details.

My grandma used to put hot sauce on my dad's thumb to keep him from sucking his thumb.

She also used to put soap in my mouth when I would say a bad word.

That last one didn't work.  I just saved up all the bad words to use in my adulthood.

    Damn fvcking straight.

Anytime the little boy lied to his mom, she gave him hot sauce and then a cold shower right after. He's adopted too which makes it that much worse!

Pretty much. She's going on trial next month for child abuse.

Daaaaang.  Yeah, that's ridiculous and right up there with that one woman who would give her son a spanking when he didn't say good morning to her.

The 1/3 of responders that said that was cool are morons.

  • Obviously I can't say what I'll do with a 7 year old who misbehaves until I get there but I can say with confidence punishment would not include hot sauce or cold showers.  That's cruel.

  • Hell no!  That is completely unacceptable.

I saw this one when it orginally aired. I didn't know she was going on trial for child abuse. She should though!

Not only would she make him put hot sauce in his mouth, but he'd have to hold in his mouth and swish it around.

    That poor child!

My mom did this to me and I always thought it was such a stupid idea.  When she walked away, I just wiped it off .

And no, I don't think its acceptable or effective.

  • My mom actually did the whole hot sauce thing, but mostly to a niece and nephew of mine who are the same age as me. I thought it was mean then and I still do now. I love my mom, but when I was an adult I told her she was abusive and that pulling the crap she did was a b!tch move. Guess who doesn't ever get to babysit Bella? I will tell you that it was horrible too cause they would cry really bad and the punishment didn't really work and mostly just made them scared of her. Sadly it was "better" than the horrific crap their mother pulled.

  • No it is not an effective form of punishment. And no I would never do that. Neither is spanking or putting soap in a kids mouth. So if you are going to throw her under the bus, make sure you throw every mother and father out there that has used physical intimidation and pain to correct behavior.

We are going to see a lot of old mommas and pappas in the court.

Here is where I feel for the mother. Mom knew that her use of punishment was getting nowhere, mom knew that her lack of feelings for the kid (who is a twin) was wrong, mom knew she was in too deep and needed support. This is not a kid who behaves badly, this is a kid likely with pre-existing serious medical issues that the adoptive mother was not knowledgable, or equipped to handle. There are a lot of moms out there with too much pride to admit they are very wrong. She was wrong, but I think the case for child abuse is reaching. If she gets that slapped on her, there are a lot of other parents that need to slapped, pun intended, with that charge as well.

  • I couldn't watch it. Just imagine the horror that poor boy was going through. So sad! Hot sauce could burn his mouth and the cold shower...they're in ALASKA! Their cold water is colder than my cold water here in Southern CA. Angry
