2nd Trimester

No Bladder on Ultrascan

I went for my 19 week ultrasoun 2 weeks ago, and got a call the other day that everything was normal except that I had to come back in for another ultrasound because they couldn't see the bladder. I'm trying not to worry to much, because I figured the kidneys wouldn't be normal if she didn't have a bladder at all. The urine has to go somewhere right? And they didn't ask me to come back for 1 1/2 weeks. Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: No Bladder on Ultrascan

  • Do you think it's possible that the tech "forgot" to look for the bladder and that is why they need you to come back for another one?

I wouldn't worry too much because you never know why they "couldn't find it".  It could just be that they forgot to mark it down and take a shot of it, you know?

This is just what I thought. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry. :-)

  • I don't know if this tidbit helps, but when I went the tech said LO's bladder was empty when I got there, but luckily it was full again by the end of the us. She gave me the impression that you can't see it unless it's full.
  • I had my follow up u/s today because at the first one they couldn't see things either, mainly in the heart, she could not see an aortic arch. I just took it to mean that the tech could not see it during the scan, not that there wasn't anything there. We went back today and everything was perfect.

    This.

The same with the stomach - they're looking for a bubble.  If the bladder was empty, it's likely they moved on, and perhaps forgot to go back and look for it again.

Try to stay calm!!  High blood pressure from stressing does nothing for you, nor the baby!! :)

  • I have to go back for another scan March 2nd because they couldn't get a good look at the umbilical cord.  My cousin is an OBGYN and said that it happens all the time and not to worry (I mean having a second scan).  Sometimes the babies just don't coorporate!
  • This is kinda unrelated, but with DD i had an u/s at 38 weeks and the tech was like "look, she's peeing!". She could see the bladder empty and become smaller. Crazy!

I hope everything turns out fine. T&P for a healthy LO,.

  • Thanks everyone! I've been good about not worrying much. Better after I see others having to do the same thing. I'm glad to hear that everyone else's have worked out well.
