When to swaddle?

I want to swaddle LO for naps and night time but I'm not sure when to do it in relation to everything else.

Here's what I normally do:

Wake up, change diaper, eat, burp, change diaper (sometimes), swaddle, hold, lay down. The problem is that he's the most relaxed after eating but by the time I bump, change, and swaddle him he's awake again. He usually fights being swaddled too so that makes him cranky. Any advice?

  • Well, I didn't swaddle DS b/c he hated it and didn't settle when I got him swaddled.  DD on the otherhand, calms almost immediately when swaddled.  But I wait until right before I want to put her down before swaddling her.  She typically poops while nursing, so then I have to change her diaper.  I nurse both sides, change her diaper, and then swaddle her.  Pop her on one breast to get her to sleep and put her down.  Also, I only swaddle her at night b/c she sleeps better/longer while swaddled and I don't want her doing long stretches of deep sleep during the day.

  • I have only been swaddling at night- as part of his "cues" that it is nighttime. He sleeps fine after a feeding- so my schedule is diaper, feed, sleep.

  • I feed, burp, change, swaddle, feed, burp, and lay down. We have to split her feedings because she spits up alot so I do all the moving and shaking in the middle so she can drift back to sleep during the last half of her bottle.

Do you ever have trouble getting her to feed again after the break? Sometimes when I try that w/ DS he only drinks in the beginning and refuses it after. Then he ends up hungry again in 45 minutes.

  • Yes, not all the time but she'll play with the nipple or just let it pool in her mouth for as long as 10 minutes and then get with the program and act like she's starving. We just let her take a break and keep offering the bottle untilshe takes it.

  • I change diaper, nurse, burp and swaddle when DS is drowsy then lay him down and he falls into a deep sleep on his own.
