School-Aged Children

Any Parents Of Middle School Aged Children?

I haven't had a chance to *lurk* on this board, but I was wondering if there are any parents of middle school aged kids on this board. DD#1 is 12 yo and I am finding that the middle school years have been more difficult than previous years! Thanks!

  • Yes, my son will be 12 soon and in 6th grade. What a difference it is from elementary to middle!

  • My son's school is great actually. I'm just talking about my son's pre-teen attitude that has popped up on our lives. lol.

My son's in high school now. We much preferred the middle school years to elementary. The school was more proactive around social and academic issues, the teachers were more professional and responsive around communication and the more varied curriculum and activities were a better fit for DS. he has never gone back to visit his old elementary, he stops by to help out with the middle school band from time to time.

What sort of issues are you having that you would describe as "difficult"?

The hormones, her school work - I think I need to go back to school to help her with her with it. I guess the typical Jr. High growing pains. DD is a straight A student and does very well at school and we do not have any discipline problems with her.
  • I'm just going to listen to all of you. My daughter is only 9... but, I like to know what's ahead.

From what I've heard, there is a big jump in expectations. Kids need to be more organized after elementary school. They have multiple subjects/classes/teachers to keep straight. They have definite interests and activities that compete for their after-school time. Add in expectations of friends and family... that is a great deal for a young person to prioritize. Sometimes, smart kids struggle, because they have difficulty managing the increased load.

All of the above. DD went to Middle School (6th-8th) and 6th grade was very tough. The changing of classes, the responsibility, the school work, the friends, etc. DD also went into Kindergarten when she was 4, so I think maturity wise she is on the immature/naive side. This year has been 100% better than last year!
  • I don't post on here all the time simply because I keep forgetting that this board is here but it is definately helpful to have this board and it's good support.

I have a DD that is 13, 7th grade. Tough years!

  • My oldest is in 7th grade and turns 13 in May. We love her school. We're having some independence issues and dealing with a ton of hormones. Goes with the territory I guess. Tongue Tied

  • My oldest is in 8th grade.  I have to say that 6th grade was HELL on Earth.  He went from a charter school to traditional public school and the whole year was a struggle.  7th grade was somewhat better and 8th grade has been pretty darned good-  especially considering that in September we dropped the bomb on him that after almost 14 years of being an only child that he was getting a baby brother in January.

  • I have a 13 1/2 year old son, he is in the 8th grade. I often say there isn't much difference between a him and my 2 year old.
