Considering a Move to TN

Hello ladies,

My DH and I are considering a move to TN within the next 3 to 5 years. We are in Northern California and have been our entire lives. CA is going down the tubes fast. It is very hard to provide a good quality life for our children. I am so over video games, snotty teenagers with no respect, outrageous home prices and no jobs. What can you tell me about TN? How is the weather? What about the school systems? Are there "bad" areas to live in? How has the economy affected your state? Do  you see any improvements in the job market. Does it seem to require 2 incomes to provide for a family?

Thanks in advance for all the input.

Casey

Re: Considering a Move to TN

  • We just moved to Tennessee last May. And we love it! Partly because we have family here but we also think it's beautiful here. We moved from North Dakota so we are loving the weather too. We are in the Cookeville area, which is Mid-Tennessee and the cost of living is very inexpensive. My husband works and I stay home with the kids and it has worked out pretty well. That's about all I can tell you, like I said we've only been here less than a year.

  • My husband and I are also moving to TN from North GA. We are currently waiting to close on a house in Pigeon Forge. I do not live there yet, but we've visited often (twice a month or so) since October and we LOVE it!! People there are a lot more hospitable as well as many job opportunities all throughout the state. It is a busy and upcoming state all over. The schooling system is fantastic and there are many private, public and Christian schools with high test scores. The whole state has a VERY low crime rate and very low amount of registered sex offenders. I have completed searched every possible thing to research. I would highly recommend TN to anyone. The only downside for our area would be traffic on the weekends. With it being a tourist community the traffic gets a little hectic but it always gets better Sunday evenings and weekdays. We are TTC and I can't think of a better place to create a family and raise our baby. And, did I mention, the housing market is AMAZING! We just bought our first house for 62,000 and it appraised at over 110!

  • Great info. Thanks. I will be looking into the area. Oh and I forgot about the wine. I had better remember to sign up for some wine clubs... Funny I just went wine tasting with some of the girls on the NorCal baby board yesterday. It was so much fun. And no hangover! woot woot! Ok enough about wine....We are stuck in our house for at least 1.5 years. We just bought in July 09....and of course with the market we are upside down...we would like the market to come back up so we could break even..or buy a home out there and then just let this one go. i will start researching home. How is the snow and schools in the Cleveland area? What abou the crime rate?

  • I live in Nashville and we love it. We have a 21 month old and our 2nd baby is due in August.  I think overall Nashville is a bit more expensive than other areas of Tennessee but it really depends on the neighborhood you choose as there are a lot of affordable ones in the middle Tennessee area.  I am from here, moved away to Chicago for a while and then moved back.  I also went to college in Knoxville and love East Tennessee as well.  I work for an economist from California and he moved his family here due to the deterioration of CA and the fact that we have no state income tax.  The state as a whole is very affordable and I think depending on your lifestyle and needs you could definitely do fine with 1 income.  Of course so many things factor into that decision but it is definitely doable.  Good luck!
  • I have lived in East TN (Knoxville area) for 22 yrs and Middle TN (Nashville area) for 6 years, and I have enjoyed both.  I'm in Middle TN as of right now and we are living comfortably on one income (I SAH).

East TN - Its beautiful, lots to do outdoors, and the weather is great.  The summers do get a bit hot (upper 90's), but I think you'd get used to it.  Knoxville has some really great schools.  East and South Knox county have bad reputations, though.  Blount county is a good school system.  McMinn county is a good school system.  And Anderson county has a good school system.  The prices of houses are down right now, and jobs seem to be scarce (at least if you an engineer).

Middle TN - Not as "beautiful" as East TN, but has its perks. Nashville is an awesome place for families.  So many things to do for free.  Weather is great here as well.  The winters are becoming a bit brutal (20's with a lot of snow).  People can't drive here in the snow.  :)  Davidson county (Nashville) doesn't have the best schools, but there are a few charter/magnet schools that don't have tuition.  Sumner county schools are great (northeast of Davidson county).  Wilson county are fair.  Murfreesboro is a bit scary if you ask me.  Lately there has been gang activity, although its a large area and the North side of the city is ok.

Overall, I love TN.  The people are genuinely happy and friendly.  Yes, we do have some areas that I would avoid, but no matter where you live there will be areas like that.  The median home price in TN is $150,000.  We don't have a state tax...and cost of living is pretty low.  We do have a food tax, which kinda stinks.

Hope this helps a bit.  Coming from someone who has a brother in Oakland, CA, a sister in Denver, and a brother in New York, I think I am living in the best place in the US.  :)

  • Just moved to Nashville from Socal in january. The winter took getting used to but the spring is beautiful so far. Tornado warnings are a new thing for me. It's nice to know if we stay here we can buy a house for around $200,000 instead of a tiny condo that we could get in socal. I notice people are nicer and always hold doors open for you =-)
