Cloth Diapering

Hey, Portland Mamas.

Throughout my pregnancy, I just assumed I'd used disposable diapers, but with my due date closely approaching I'm questioning this decision.

I've checked out the Cloth Diapering board, but thought I'd check in here as well.

Do any of you cloth diaper? Any advice, suggestions, etc.? Where do you shop locally for your diapering supplies? I don't have any friends who have gone the cloth diaper route so I'm interested to hear what local Bumpies have done.

 Thanks.

  • I CD and I use the Tidee Didee diaper service.  It is very easy, I don't even have to rinse/dump out the contents. You can buy the bummies covers there.

Two other CD places are Milagros Boutique in NE off Killingsworth and Mother Natures at SE Clinton and 26th.

  • We used Bum Genius and Knickernappies from Mother Natures.  They explain everything really well and are always available to help after you start using them.

  • I would suggest taking a class on CDing. I had really wanted to CD so I bought a big lot of cloth diapers and LO just leaked constantly so after a few days I gave up and sold them.  Last night I just ordered 5 cloth diapers so I can try it again just while we are at home.  If I would have taken the class that had later been suggested, I probably wouldn't have given up on them.

Oh, and btw, I bought mine on Amazon last night with a couple of 20% of codes and 2 $10 off and ended up getting them for less than half price which is nice when they are so expensive.

  • Check out Babyworks too...they are located on NW Thurman downtown but you can see what they have online.  Oh, and Zoom Baby Gear...they had a store but recently closed and will be selling online only.  We jstarted cloth diapers not too long ago and so far so good.  We aren't using a service but I actually don't mind washing them.  There were so many to try that we bought a stack of prefolds, a few fitted and all in ones.  So far we like the fitted and AIOs best, but once you get the hang of the prefolds and wraps it's pretty easy.  Good luck!

  • We are planning to CD our LO when she is born.  We took the Cloth Diaper 101 class at Cotten Babies in Vanouver (right off of I-5 and SR14).  They were super helpful.  On another visit, one of the staff took me around and explained the pros and cons for each type of diaper they carry.  This took like 30-40 minutes.  They are always so sweet and eager to help.  You should check them out, because it is much cheaper to buy your own than have a service in the long run.  You might also think about doing a trial offer someplace like Jillian's Drawers to test out different types.
