Help!! Can't walk after shots..... anyone experience this?

We finally went today and got the chicken pox vaccination and the prevnar 13...... one on each leg.  Normally he never reacts at all to shots--I'm lucky--but this time he took a relatively long nap (a good thing) but when he woke up he can't seem to walk on his one leg.  He was crying really hard when he woke up---which is not like him at all.  He's never had a reaction like this.  It's been over an hour since he's been up from his nap and he still can't walk--not even to go and get a cookie (that's how I know it's serious) LOL.

I'm really worried.  Anyone experience this???  I gave him tylenol about 30 min ago--but no relief yet.  He's fine otherwise--just can't put weight on that leg.

  • We have experienced this -- only once, but like you I was really freaked out. I was told it's fairly normal and that a lot of pedis put shots in their arms at this age for just this reason. Hope he feels better soon!

How long did it last that he couldn't walk??? This is just the most bizarre thing.  Poor guy.

  • Well, I remember it was later in the day because we had an afternoon appointment. I was very freaked out because Lily is always moving all over and she suddenly just wouldn't budge off the couch. She was like that all night but was fine in the morning.

  • have you called your doctor's office? I would call the off-hours line if they are already closed and have the on-call person call you back.
  • Hopefully that is normal but it would scare the crap out of me.  I'd definitely call the after hours line and get someone to call you back for some peace of mind.  GL!

  • we had this happen at our last dr visit a month ago for the first time ever.  ds was fine all morning after the shot, took a nap, woke up crying and SUPER limping.  you could tell he was trying to walk and just couldn't get it together.  i ended up letting him sit in his high chair and eat popsicles while watching a movie.  after that he laid on the sofa until dinner.  went to bed a little early and was perfectly fine when he woke up the next day.

it was weird because he had never had a reaction like that, but dh and my mom weren't worried about it and said it was normal for kids to have that after shots.  and he was fine the next day so i guess they were right.

it wasn't a chicken pox shot though, it was a booster for something else, but i can't remember now...

  • i think i read somewhere that the Prevnar 13  medicine stings and can cause their leg to be sore.  DS had the same reaction but was fine the next day.

  • Thanks ladies!!!  Well, after a couple hours of him being up after his nap he finally could walk again--thank GOD!  I was so scared.  I've never seen him like that--he's normally such a tough guy.  But finally he just started hobbling and eventually started even "pseudo running".  So I'm very relieved now.
