Tea

I've been drinking pretty much straight water since I found out I was pregnant. I know I can have other drinks, I've just been sticking to water. I wanted to have some iced tea the other day, but read not to drink herbal teas. Is green or black tea safe to drink?

Re: Tea

  • I've heard black tea is fine (just watch the caffeine) and that an antioxidant in green tea can inhibit the activity of folate so it was better to avoid it. I have read that some herbal teas are ok, like peppermint (can't remember others I would have to check again). Hope that helps!

  • As far as I know tea is fine, green or black. You just should be careful the amount of caffeine you drink. I don't think you're suppose to have more than 200 mg of caffeine a day. A cup of tea has 40-60 mg of caffeine. Green has less than black. That's what my pregnancy book says at least.

  • Snapple teas don't have caffeine, so if thats what you're worried about, try them! Their orange flavor got me through the first part of my m/s, but then I started vomiting and nothing helped. Peppermint is fine for you, and is supposed to help with m/s, but it can be very strongly scented, so watch out if your nose is sensitive.

  • You shouldn't have any tea with Eucalyptus in it because excessive amounts can actually cause contractions! We found the information by googling "tea to avoid while pregnant"

  • Try the Yogi, Mother to Be tea. It's tea bags but you can make it hot/cold. Yum.

  • I stick to one cup of tea a day. My normal even when I'm not pregnant. Depending on how tired I am, I have either caffeinated or caffeine free.
