Babies: 6 - 9 Months

No Vaccinations?

A friend of mine told me yesterday that she is not vaccinating her DS at all and she wanted me to know because our LOs are starting to play together and share toys.

Is this something I should worry about? Things I should keep my eye open for? My DD has been following the recommended vac schedule since birth.

I am asking the doc at our appointment tomorrow but, I was hoping to get some real experience incite.

  • Without commenting on how stupid not vaccinating at all is (oops, too late), I will say that as long as my child was vaccinated on time, I wouldn't be concerned.

Your child is protected, I would only be worried about if if your baby could not or had not been vaccinated yet.

  • I would worry about it from a liability standpoint.  If your LO gets a disease that s/he is vaccinated for s/he could still carry it.  Then her child could get it.

Also, I would worry that this could turn into an ugle anti/pro vaccine argument between the two of you.  Unfortunately, from my experience, most people who are anti vaccine are very uniformed and close minded. (There are some legitimate reasons not to vaccinate)

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

This.  Did she tell you why she has chosen this route?  Is her child immuno-compromised and cannot receive them?  Or is she.... hmm.... how do I put this.... dumb?

This would be my main concern is for later on down the road. You know if your child is vaccinated they are protected from those diseases but, there may be a possibility of being a potential carrier.

Be thankful that she told you! But I wouldn't want my child playing with a baby who was not vaccinated AT ALL!

    Ditto.

  • She has done a ton of research and I think the main reason she doesn't want to vaccinate is because of the additives in the shots.

She's not dumb but I am hoping she changes her mind somewhere down the road. I'm not going to push the issue with her.

I never thought about the fact that DD could pass something on to her DS though. That would suck.

Yep, for her.  That's the needless chance she's taking.

I think you should tell her that, be like "what if my DD is carrying something and passes it to your DS??" so it doesn't come across as rude, but more concerning, KWIM?

No, for her child. It's sad to say, but I wouldn't let my child play with her child,  not because of my concern for my own child but out of concern for hers.

This. Your child will be protected no doubt. I feel bad for her child because there are so many diseases she will be exposed to. Living in the United States or not several immigrants come here everyday from different countries, and several Americans travel from place to place. It's scary if you think about it. IMO it's neglect not to PROTECT your child.

  • I would maybe keep an eye out for diseases your child hasn't been vaccinated against yet. My DH recently had shingles and I was completely anxious and protective because my DS hasn't had his chicken pox vaccine yet (he doesn't get it until 12 months). Knowing that my child was exposed and at risk for catching a disease was a terrible feeling and really strengthened my position on vaccination.

  • Next time you talk to her ask if she would rather her child have no reaction to an additive or possibly death from a preventable disease.

  • Actually it isn't true that your LO is 100% protected even though she is vaccinated. Vaccines aren't 100% effective which is why everyone who can get vaccines should get them. It is called herd immunity and I wouldn't want someone's un-vaccinated child playing with mine.

This this this! My oldest just took a round of strong antibiotics after pertussis exposure at school. Guess what?? The sick child with pertussis WAS fully vaccinated. It's only 50-90% effective. I wouldn't be friends with her anymore (unless the child can't receive vaccines) bc she is endangering not just the life of her child, but of yours, if she is abstaining without a valid medical reason.

  • Our pediatrician said the main thing you have to worry about when the children are this young is not having a child that has just received a live virus vaccine around a child who has not received any vaccines at all.
