Would you call the pedi? (Poop Issue)

My SIL watched Allie for me yesterday.  She called this morning to tell me that she found blood in Allie's stool the one and only time she pooped yesterday.  She said it was bright red and kind of mixed throughout, but there was enough that it was readily apparent.  I told her I would keep an eye on it.

Allie pooped a few minutes ago for the first time today and there was no blood.  She's pretty much a once/maybe twice a day pooper so it will take awhile to see if it happens again.

I'm in the camp of just keeping my eye on it and seeing what happens over the next few days rather than call the pedi (I know they won't do anything without a stool sample anyway).  However, I've recently been accused by a family member of being a bad parent for not taking illness seriously enough and letting Allie ride it out too often, so that's weighing on my mind as well.  What would you do?

  • If it was bright red, I'd assume it was from maybe a little tear or hemmie inside her rectum.

  • That's pretty much what Dr. Google said this morning when I looked it up.  I understand that the internet is not always a reliable source, but several well-known Children's hospitals' websites made it seem like it wasn't an urgent matter by any means.

  • I agree with Kristen. I wouldn't worry unless it happens again.
  • If it was a tear, she could just need some more fluids. I wouldn't be rushing off the pedi either. If it ever looks like dark/black type blood, that requires immediate attention.

Ditto. FWIW, Dr. Oz would agree. I know because I listen to him every single morning, and he did a riveting (sarcasm) segment on this very thing, yesterday. There were visuals and everything.

Sounds like someone needs a big slice of nunyabiznass pie.

More like a throat punch, but that's a different story.

  • I agree w/ pp, I've always been told by the pedi that bright red blood is usually a sign of a hemmie or some tearing based on hard stool. The kind to be concerned about is when it looks almost black in the poop and its all throughout.

  • Ditto pp.  Did she say if it was hard?  If it was or has been, I definitely wouldn't be concerned about the blood, just up her fluids.  Are you really 18 weeks already??!

  • I agree with Drs. Kristen and Google.
