I saw this on 3-6 and thought it was interesting.
Where do you kiss your baby? Cheeks, feet, lips etc. I assume most of us kiss our babies erywhere but lots of the girls over there don't kiss their babies on the lips (because it's "weird" not because of germs). Then some stop kissing their kids on the lips when they get to a certain age because they think it's weird.
I never really thought of it as weird. I kiss my Mom and Dad on the lips. Heck, I even kiss my 37 year old BIL on the lips. NOT long smooches just a quick peck with a hug goodbye or something. I never gave it a second thought. To clarify, I really only kiss family like that, I am sooo not the "hug and kiss my girlfriends" kind of person.
So, chime in ladies.
Re: Poll Time!
H and I both kiss Logan on the lips (in addition to cheeks, head, etc.). I've never thought it was weird, and I don't have a timeline on when (if??) we'll stop.
A few months ago Logan walked over to my friend's husband and just randomly gave him a quick smooch on the mouth. It definitely surprised him (and me--L does not usually randomly walk around and kiss people). Luckily my friend's H has a 3 year old boy of his own so he took it in stride.
We kiss Nicholas pretty much everywhere (cheeks, lips, forehead, head, belly, toes, etc.) I dont think its weird for parents or grandparents to kiss a child on the lips and we probably will only stop doing this if and when Nicholas becomes self-conscious about it (I'll still be kissing him on the cheek though even if he tries to get away from it which I figure he will come the pre-teen/teen years...a boys never too old to kiss his mama)
I am a hugger, not so much a kisser with other people. My immediate family (parents and siblings) arent very physically affectionate so I rarely have any bodily contact with any of them. We were affectionate when we were kids but as we've gotten older we just dont. I'll occasionally hug my mom but I just honestly dont think of doing it and neither does she. My parents and siblings are physically affectionate with Nicholas though. DH's family on the other hand are VERY physically affectionate and are big huggers. We hug each other everytime we see each other and before we leave from hanging out. I've probably hugged my FIL more than my own dad in the 7 years I've been with DH. Nicholas pretty much has permanent lipstick marks on his cheeks from my DH's mom haha I wonder if it comes from being a family with mostly women (DH has 4 sisters, hes the only boy other than his dad). We are all very affectionate with each others kids too always kissing and hugging them which I think is completely normal and have no problem with it.
I kiss my kids on the cheek and forehead. Not often on the lips though. No real thought or reason behind it. Same with my parents, on the cheek.
As for DH... :P
Really? People think kissing their kids on the lips is strange? Now I'm interested in their responses. At what age is it considered taboo?
Both DH and I kiss the boys all over the face. I don't force J to kiss me on the lips or anything, but I would never turn away to avoid doing so for *fear* that it was weird or anything.
To be honest, neither my family nor my IL's are a family of kissers. My parents sometimes (now) kiss me on the head or the cheek (mostly if/when I'm holding a child in my hands and a hug isn't possible); but, now that I think of it, I don't really remember us exchanging kisses all that often when I was little. We've always just been huggers, I guess. That said, both of my parents kiss the boys all.the.time.
Hmmmm...I wonder what kind of impact Dr. Spock had on the outward displays of affection our (collectively by way of a generation) parents showed some of us.
I kiss DD on the lips, cheek, head, nose, toes... I think the slobbery kisses I get now are totally precious and will probably end.
However, there is some evidence that kissing babies on the mouth if you have active tooth decay can transfer the bacteria that contributes to tooth decay... that is a good reason to make sure YOU are taking good care of your teeth and going to the dentist regularly.
This is hilarious! We have been friends for 20 years and I think you "might" have hugged me on my wedding day.
Anyway I kiss my kids on the lips all the time. Max actually licked me a little today.
