Oh, poop (long)

...as in dog poop.

We finally ventured outdoors to play yesterday and discovered someone else has been enjoying our yard this winter while we have been bundled up indoors.

Our new neighbors who are leasing the house next door have two large labs who we see get the run of the land when they are let out. FWIW, they are usually outside dogs in the warmer weather and get kept in a wire fence without any shelter from the elements (just to give you an idea of how they regard their pets). We've seen the dogs get stuck in windy thunderstorms without anyone bringing them in.

So, back to the present day... There is a lot a poop...a lot. Within a 20 foot radius of our patio, there is enough to fill up a large garbage bag. The neighbors would have to realize the dogs are not pooping in their own yard.

DH and I have been going around about what we can do. It's really not just a poop thing either. The other day when we were briefly outside, the dogs came running over to me and the kids while we were on our property with a territorial bark. I'm not that afraid that they would hurt anyone since they settle down after I pet them a bit. There is always that chance though...

A couple months ago, we went to a township hearing to protest a variance they were trying to pass to allow them to do something to their property that would bring our property value way down and cause unsightliness and possible danger to the other neighbors. The matter was declined by the Board (yay!) and a more expensive alternative was offered. It appears they are angry that we spoke out since they have been bad-mouthing us to other neighbors who we are friends with.

That's neither hear nor there in this poop matter, but as a result we don't feel like they would be responsive if we calmly asked them to keep their dogs on their property.

So, we have a few options: shovel the poo and place it back in their yard which I would imagine would be an on-going effort, call animal control and request they come out and look at the situation (although wouldn't they have to actually catch the dogs in our yard at that time?), ignore the situation and take care of the mess of two large dogs that aren't ours, to keep the peace or ask them to take care of their mess and if they refuse, allow it to get ugly.

Any thoughts?

  • We had the same poopy problem with a neighbor of ours a couple years ago.  We did talk to them and the circumstances did not change.  I actually went and talked to the police for our village and made an official report.  The police did talk with them and reminded them that their is a leash law in effect in our village and if the dogs were seen off leash wandering about they could be picked up and the owners fined...a significant amount of money.  Perhaps this could help you?  Good luck!

  • Ick.

I'd talk to them as calmly as you can and ask that they clean up after their dogs.

I'd document what you found yesterday and that you spoke with them today.

If that doesn't help, I'd build a fence.  Probably not what you wanted to hear, but I'm not sure there's an easier solution.

  • I have to say, house hunting up here I was shocked that there aren't privacy fences. I asked my realtor and she said that they do the timber/wire fences.

FWIW- I was always taught good fences make good neighbors.

Escape - thanks for sharing. We may have to go that route.

Kel- good idea to start documenting and take some photos. Kind of gross to photograph poo but I guess you do what you've gotta doo-doo. Maybe I could photoshop Mr. Hankie's face on for fun. :-)

KMama- yes this situation would warrant a fence line for sure. We have 2.5 acres of land though so that's not an option for us financially although I would love it to be.

  • I'd go the route of trying to talk to them, then and if they don't respond talking to local authorities.  2.5 acres is a HUGE fence and mucho money.  The only other thing I can think of is a paint gun and aiming at their sides.... :)  I'm just PLAYING- but it would send a clear signal.

  • If you need a fence, I know a guy who might have the remnants of one just sitting around... Wink
