failed glucose test any sugestions?

Just found out I failed my one hour and now have to be on a high sugar/high carb diet for 3 days and then go back for the 3 hr test.  Anyone have this happen? (passed easily w my dd 2 yrs ago).   Any suggestions or helpful hints?  I am prob worrying about nothing, but it is always the fear of the unknown that gets me.  I am 26 weeks with twins anow and cant stop thinking about a major diet change for the entire rest of my pregnancy.  Now sure exactly what I am looking for here, maybe just reassurance from someone who has been through it and already came out on the other side?  Ideas of what I would have to change/eliminate from my diet?

Re: failed glucose test any sugestions?

  • I failed both.

My doc never made me go on a high sugar diet before the 3 hr.  never heard of that....  But take LOTS of magazines!! Wink cuz they make you "stay" there.

I dreaded the whole 'no sugar in my diet' thing....but it wasn't that bad.  I controlled my GD with diet only and the girls turned out fine.  I was a juice junkie, so cutting out juices was hard for me.  It was hard for like a week or so, with no sugar, or reduced sugar items, but then my body got used to it.   I have never had blood sugar issues in the past, so I just chalked it up to the twin pregnancy.  GL!

  • I failed the 1 hour and I remember having to follow a special diet that they gave me for a few days before the 3 hour test but I honestly can't even remember what was in the diet.  You may not have to end up being on a special diet for the rest of your pregnancy, a lot of women fail the 1 hour but then pass the 3 hour (that is what happened with me).  So, hopefully that may be your case as well.

As far as the actual test, in my experience (and in a lot of other people's that I have read), the first hour is the worst and then the next 2 hours are nowhere near as bad.  If they will let you eat ice chips, do that - it made me feel so much better during that first hour.  Also, when the drink would make me feel really weird, I stepped outside for a few minutes and the fresh air helped a lot.  Bring a book, ipod or whatever you can because it does get boring!  Good luck!

  • I failed the 3 hr at about 20 weeks and miserably. GD stinks. but the plus that I found is that I didn't gain a ton of weight and I lost it all very quickly after I delivered. I had to go on Glyburide to control my GD. The part that got to me was the schedule that I had to be on to take eat and take my blood sugar. I didn't have to be on a special diet before I took my 3 hr, but every Dr. is different. GL.

  • I had GD with my babies and it really is not that bad.  I did not have to drastically change my diet.  It is really about portion contol more than anything.

  • I freaked out last week when I failed my 1 HR just barely..a 143 and need to be under 140. I haven't heard of a high sugar high carb diet before the 3hr, that seems weird to me since that will make your results higher. I ate really good for 3 days prior to my 3 hr, lots of protein and veges and passed my 3 hr with "flying colors" my nurse said. GL!!!

  • I have GD and was terrified after the diagnosis.  It really isn't bad though.  Don't get me wrong, it was so hard to make it through Valentines Day with NO sugar/carbs, but I did it.  You sort of have to get creative with meals to make sure you don't get bored of the same old things.  I have so far been able to control my GD with diet, but they've threatened me with meds the last two weeks because of one or two sugar spikes.  Once you get over the shock of it, you go into "mom mode" and do what it takes to get your babies here safely.

I've never heard of the high sugar/carb diet.  GL!

  • The glucose load on the 3 days prior to the 3 hour test is recommended by ACOG.  You need at least 150 grams of carbs for the 3 prior days.  If you consume too few carbs on those days your body will not respond appropriately and give you "spuriously" high numbers.

Spuriously is verbatim from the ACOG bulletin.  :)

With that being said, I am sure many MoMs eat nearly 150 grams of carbs a day if you follow Dr. Luke.  Just sayin!

    Good luck.
