Induction Question

I know induction methods vary depending on your own situation (dilation/effacement/station/cervical consistency/etc).  However, I'd love to hear how you were induced (and what progress you had prior to it).

Today was my 40 wk appt and I am 1.5cm/70% effaced, -2 station with intermediate consistency.

I'll be induced in roughly 9 days if he doesn't come on his own...Assuming I make minor changes from this week (which I hope is NOT the case), OB says I'll probably start with being admitted at night and started on Cervadil; then starting Pitocin the AM.

How did your induction go?  How were you induced?

Re: Induction Question

  • I am in the same situation as you, except my adventure will start this Friday night (I am already 41w2d).  I am interested to see the responses you get.

  • While my delivery didn't go so well, the induction due to early pre-e went fine.

    I was 1cm dilated, 50% effaced.

Thursday night @ 9pm they started me on Cervadil which looks like the paper casing for a straw and they stick it ontop of your cervix(not painful) and it just hangs out a bit like a tampon string so you have to be careful going to the bathroom not to pull it out. This started contractions for me right away so I needed a sleeping aide- 3 hours of sleep, woo hoo! They kept it in for 12 hours so Friday morning @ 9am they took it out and at 11am they broke my water. From there contractions kept getting stronger and I went up to 3cm but stalled because I was fighting them. I had an epidural at 6pm later that night, my contractions slowed down because of the epi and I had to get pitocin at 7pm. Once I had pitocin I went from 3-4cm to 6-7cm and then I was at 10cm by 11:30pm. With pitocin it is normal to move up a cm dilated every hour and then once you hit 6cm to go up a cm dilated every half hour. It is also not uncommon for some women to skip (like I did) from 6-7cm all the way to 10cm just like that.

As far as the Cervadil goes, it may or may not cause contractions for you.

  • I was induced at 37w due to pre-e and I was 1cm dilated when I was admitted. Baby was still high. I had cervadil around 9pm and then started pitocin around 6am and have my water broken around 8am. My body just wasn't ready and I ended up with a c/s.

  • I was induced at 39 weeks because of chronic hypertension.  I started cirvidal on Thursday night, in 8 hours it took me from 0-4.5 cm. At 9 the next morning, they started inserting cyotec. They inserted it vaginally every 4 hours.  The Cyotec didn't do a thing for me,other than start some painful contractions.  I didn't dilate at all during this 24 hour time period. Saturday afternoon, my doctor started me on pitocin around 3 pm.  by 8 pm I was at 6.5 cm and could have my water broken (once I got my epi).  I got the epi around 9:30 pm and my water was broke by 10.  My epi didn't take and I could feel everything. The contractions were so much more intense, I could barely lay, I was so tired, and started begging for a c-section. I insisted that I wouldn't be able to hold out with the amount of pain i was in.  I  was checked and was at 9 cm. My doctor went to call in doctors needed for a c-section.  Almost as soon as he walked out of the room, I felt an insane need to push. My doc came rushing back in, and I was at 10 cm.  By 11 : 45 I was fully dilated and could push.  I pushed for a little over an hour. The pushing felt amazing, and put me back into control of my labor. Though, the epi didn't work, during the pushing the pain was so much more manageable.  DD was born at 12:50 am on Sunday morning.  The induction process, was a long one for me, but all in all not too bad.  If i had it to do all over again, I would have taken the sleeping meds and pain meds they offered on night 2 so I could have slept ( I didn't because i thought if things started to move fast I would be too groggy for delivery).  Sleep when you can...it would have made things so much easier towards the end for me. Good luck! I hope you make progress and can go into labor on your own!

  • I did cervadil for 12 hours then started Pitocin.  Ultimately I was having contractions, but the baby wouldn't drop and I wouldn't dilate.  Small pelvis.  So I ended up with a c-section.

  • Thanks for the stories ladies!  This helps.  I'm off for a long walk hoping to induce on my own. :)
