Tell me there is something I can do to help my gassy newborn

DD will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and she is having horrible gas.  Yesterday she fussed all day and I could tell she was so uncomfortable.  Overnight she would fuss and wiggle and then pass gas and calm down, but she did this all night and has been doing it all morning.  I tried to bicycle her legs and have been burping her and patting her back a lot.  I gave her a warm bath, but nothing seems to be helping.  I am ok to deal with her being fussy, I love that I can be there for her, but I hate that she is so uncomfortable and just want to help her out.  She is exclusively breast fed...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!

  • Mylicon gas drops and/or gripe water seem to help. Also, make sure you're burping her after each breast.

  • We're using Mylicon drops, we're FF so we add drops to every bottle.  Ask you pedi for the right dose for your baby.  It doesn't make the gas stop, but it makes it easier for them to pass with less pain.

  • I use Mylicon at night when DD seems uncomfortable. During the day I try to keep DD upright. I wear her in the Moby a good chunk of the day and sit her in my lap (easier now than when she was tiny) or I strap her to her reflux wedge when I want face to face time.

I find I rarely have to actively burp her because she burps on her own when I sit her up.   Really keeping them upright as much as possible is the best way to deal with it.

  • Gas drops and keeping baby on an incline helps a ton.

  • Like many other posters said Mylicon works good. Also, eating too much dairy can cause babies to have a lot of gas.

  • When DD is gassy I give her Mylicon or gripe water and also do the bicycle legs and massage her belly or lay her on my chest with her knees to her belly.
