Maryland Babies

Sick baby...

Is anyone here ready for spring to arrive? I'm so done with winter and all these awful germs. I know that germs are good for babies, but it's surely not good for my PTO. With DH working nights, I feel awful asking him to watch DD while I'm at work, but I can't keep taking time off of work every other week. My poor aunt has been up to our house every week since January. Yes, for almost 2 months. I know she loves spending time with DD, but I just feel awful calling her up at 5:30 in the morning, asking her to come up to watch her.

Who is your back up caregiver? I feel like my MIL doesn't ever step up to the plate when DD is sick.  I've asked DH to say something to his mom. We are going to need her when my aunt starts Chemo. Okay... I'm venting. I just needed to get this off my shoulders. Thanks for reading.

Re: Sick baby...

  • Ugh, I know how you feel.  John has had on and off colds/fevers/runny nose pretty much since October.  And of course he's had something really nasty for about 2 weeks and woke up with runny eyes yesterday, but they were completely clear.  DH called me after he'd dropped John off and said that they commented on his eyes and he said "I bet they call me when he wakes up from his nap to come get him" and sure enough they did.  It's obvious that it's not pink eye, this has happened twice before, he just gets bad ear infections that make his eyes goopy.

We are really lucky that my FIL is retired and adores John and is so good with him.  Depending on how long it's been since the last time one of us took off we will alternate taking days off or call my FIL.  My mom and sister have also told us that if we can just give them a days notice they will take off work too.

  • I'm so sorry Jen :( I agree, it is the worst. I hope your girl is feeling better soon. Spring can't get here soon enough.

We don't have a backup caregiver. When DS is sick, one of us has to stay home with him. I seriously thought I was going to lose my job his first winter in daycare.

  • Oh no! I am so sorry that A is sick, again! I am right there with you in the , "I can't wait for spring" camp!! Evie has been sick on and off (mostly on) since September. We don't really have a back-up cargiver. I have burned through a lot of my PTO for dr appointments and the like. I had to take nearly a week off when DD's ear drum burst. My mom works nights, so I can't ask her to watch DD during the day. My MIL lives an hour away and doesn't drive so she can't do it either. My sister used to be a stay-at-home mom, but she recently returned to work.... Thank G-d my boss is understanding. But he is leaving and I am very nervous about what his replacement will be like.

  • I hear you.  DS is teething and has a cold right now...and of course was running a fever last night, so DH and I were trying to do the juggling for today, just in case.  He was his normal self this morning though.  I just can't wait for spring.

I'm burning through my PTO and every single day I take off, I pretty much say to myself "well, I won't be taking any time off this summer" or "I can just say goodbye to taking the week between Christmas and NY off now".  UGH.

My performance review is next week, so I'm hoping to discuss working from home with DS is sick.  My mom is retired but lives 4 hours away.  She's come down before after we've stayed home a day or two to help out, but it obviously isn't a good solution.  :/

  • Thanks ladies for letting me vent.

I feel so awful calling out of work, but can you do. You have to take off, you can't send them to daycare sick. I really wish I could work from home. That would work out so well, but that's a no go.

I'm really grateful for my aunt and all the times she comes up to our house.

  • Yeah, we're in the same boat with one exception.  Our in-home provider has the theory that if its a cold and no fever, then the sick child has already exposed the other kids so just to send them.  There are only 3 kids in daycare, so they have been passing a cold back and forth but its gone now.

My MIL lives on the other side of the world and my mom lives an hour away and works, so we have no back-up.  DH and I alternate days if need be.

  • hopefully, it'll just be this first winter in daycare and next year she'll be fine.

I've only taken off ~3 days this winter for Ella - so knock on wood!

BTW - do you really need to stay home for these illnesses?  Just coughs and colds, we go to daycare.  I really only stay home if there's fever or vomitting/diarhea.

  • Yeah, I'm another one with no backup daycare. Our families live in Indiana. If Sophia has to stay home and it is hectic day for both of us, we will split the day in half. If it ends up being more than one day, we'll usually alternate days.

She's had a fever for two days. Normally I sent her to daycare for coughs and runny noses.
