D.C. Area Babies

I have a dumb formula feeding question.

I'm trying to figure out if DD is eating a good amount of food or not, so bear with me.

Yesterday, between 7 am and 7 pm she ate 16 oz.  Last night, she ate 4 oz at 3:30.  At 7:30 this morning, she ate another 3.5 oz.  Do I include this latest bottle in the total oz count, or is it today's milk, or is it both?

Just wondering if she had just 20 or almost 24.  I haven't been counting that morning bottle as part of the 24 hours but using it to start over.  The problem is that without it she's averaging 18-20 oz a day, which seems pretty low.  Just hoping that I'm counting wrong.

Re: I have a dumb formula feeding question.

  • I think the 7:30 bottle today sounds like a new day, since you started with 7 am yesterday.  I wish I could remember what the average for babies to take in is.  I know my DD was always on the high end of what was recommended, so I probably never paid attention to what was the low end of normal.

  • Ok, the bathroom scale says that she is up to 12.2 lbs from 9.25 lbs at 2 months, so I should just to with the flow and stop worrying. Obviously she does a lot with a little.

  • I think she's doing just fine.  My DS is a big eater and is heavier than either of my girls were at this age.  As long as she's gaining, and not staying the same or losing.  And really, I think a kid has to be pretty sick to not gain or lose (my DD #2 had a bad intestinal infection in Spring 2010 and she lost weight - but it took like 5 weeks for her to lose one pound, and she was really sick).  I really wouldn't worry, sounds like that cutie is doing great!

  • Thanks. DS lost between 4 and 6 months and then didn't start growing height wise again until after 9 months, so I think I'm a little paranoid this time around.  Stupid kids that don't eat...

  • My kid (who's in the 10th-20th percentile for weight) always ate less than the age guidelines - 18-20 oz sounds just like what he was eating, and I always worried that he needed the "extra" 4 oz the book was saying he should get. I can sympathize!

  • I don't think it matters when you start the clock, just start it at the same time every day and then you can figure out how much she eats in a 24 hour period. For me it's easiest to do midnight to midnight, but DD never eats from 7:30 pm until 7 am or so (although lately she's been getting up at 5:30).

I think babies all range in what they eat. DD has been pretty consistently eating 32 oz. of BM since before 3 months (all bottle fed pumped milk). We just started introducing formula, and she's eating a little less formula. We settled on 32 oz because that's what seems to keep her full and sleeping through the night. Less should be fine if your DD is otherwise gaining.
