D.C. Area Babies

moms of newborns

What are your babies wearing in your house?

I keep going back and forth between putting an undershirt on LO and just having him in sleepers - he seems a little too warm in the undershirts and a little too cold without them. We swaddle him at night, so that's an extra layer, too.

We keep the house at about 68-69 degrees.

  • Ever since Mariann was born until now she's always worn a white onsie under whatever clothes she has on even during the summertime.  I did the same with Nicholas too.  Maybe it's a habit because DH wears an undershirt under his shirts so I do the same for Nicholas.  I think there has only been one time I've taken off his shirt and that was because we were playing outside in the brutal heat/humidity.  They always say to dress them in one more layer than what you wear.  BTW--we keep our house at 68 too.

  • We do just a sleeper in the day since I am often holding him or wearing him. He gets a blanket tucked around him if we're not touching. At night, we put him in a thick sleeper plus swaddle in a thin blanket (either arms in or arms out) . We changed our programmable thermostat to kick up a degree or 2 at night since we are touching less than in the day and since I can only have a sheet on me since we are cosleeping/bedsharing (sidecarred crib). I think we do 67 in the day and 69 at night. I find the what I'm wearing plus a layer rule to be a very good fit for him.

  • DS is in a cotton or fleecy sleeper most days.  Our thermostat is set high because our house heats unevenly - so while it's set on 74, his room may be 72 or 70.  The downstairs might be 68 or 70.  Our bedroom is 66, and the girls' room is 68 or 69.

He wears a cotton Miracle Blanket as a swaddle at night.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • when Warner was an infant I typically dressed him a sleeper with a onesie undershirt underneath. Ditto pp on always dressing them in one more layer than you in cold weather.
  • DD generally wears a short sleeved onsie under a shirt and pair of pants.  She gets dressed every day b/c I'm stressing the importance of doing that to DS.  He'd ask why she gets to wear jammies but he can't otherwise. :)  In the summer, we'll ditch that extra layer.

At night, she's in the onsie, a fleece sleeper, and a fleece swaddle sleep sack.  Our house is set at 71, but even with the temperature turned up to that (we'd keep the house at 68 if it was just us) the kids' rooms are chilly.  Their rooms kind of stink, circulation-wise.  They're chilly in the winter and sweltering in the summer.

  • I've always dressed M in the same amount of clothes I wear, but he always seems to run a little warm. Now that he's in daycare, if I dress him in multiple layers, they always seem to take off the outer layer anyway.

  • I only ever kept T in a sleeper during the day and then either a swaddle or sleep sack and night over that.  She has always run warm, and I think I was holding her for at least 12 hours a day for the first months, so she was getting plenty of heat from me.

If you think he's too warm in undershirts, could you try socks under his sleepers instead, or a hat, or some other kind of layer that might be a little less warm?

This exactly. H is a little furnace so having her in more than a sleeper around me makes her sweaty. If she is daytime napping and i'm not holding her, i'll tuck a blanket around her or swaddle,

  • J hates having onesies put on him so I avoid them, but I put him in a kimono undershirt under his sleeper during the day and night yesterday and he seemed pretty comfy. I wonder if he was cranky sometimes because he was cold :-( Although he was a crank this morning and he was in layers and being held.

I have a couple of cute fleece sleepers and J can't wear them for more than a few minutes without sweating, so I'm jealous of those of you whose babies can wear them! They are now just for when we go to doctor's appointments and he's in the cold car (our doctor's office is too close to home for the car to have time to heat up).  He does have some terry cloth sleepers that are a bit warmer.

I wish they had an alert system that wasn't a scream - like warning lights or something that would say "change my diapy!" or "feed me!" They say you get to know what the different cries mean, but from day to day I think J changes his mind as to what makes him uncomfortable - some days a wet diaper will drive him crazy and other days he'll poop a lot and then fall asleep happily in the poopy diaper.

This.  My LOs run warm so we only do one layer.  For naps I use a blanket.
