Breakfast Ideas....GD Mommas...

So yesterday I began testing my blood and so far most of my numbers have been good. Yesterday after lunch was 81 and after dinner was 112. My Fasting number this morning was 89 and after lunch today was 85.

My doctor wants my fasting number under 95 and my after meals under 120.

My big problem was breakfast. I had 1 cup of cereal (kellogs corn flakes, dry no milk) and my number was 136!!! Normally I eat breakfast at my dest at work because I do not sleep well at night and try to get up at the last possible minute in the morning.

I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on a quick/take to work breakfast that would help bring that number down.

  • I've been really enjoying these lately.  They have just the right amount of carbs for me, and lots of protein.  AND they're good!

  • Try eating only 30gr of carbs for breakfast.  I usually only eat plain oatmeal with cinnamon and a banana on the side, or plain cheerios with banana, but you are on the go so.....perhaps try a south beach granola bar with a piece of fruit?

I am on the same GD diet too and 30 grams of carbs is all I'm allowed for breakfast.

  • With my second, I wasn't able to eat any cereal in the morning.  I could eat it at lunch.

With this one, they only ones that work are the high protein ones (Special K with protein is one I am having now)

My dietician also recommends NO fruit in the morning.  I tried 1/2 a banana last week on toast with peanut butter and it was fine.

My breakfast amount is 15g-30g.  Its hard b/c I always grab something to eat on the go,  I toast an English muffin or Bagel Thin and add peanut butter.   Or scramble an egg and put it on an Everything Bagel Thin with a slice of cheese (for mornings I have more time).  Or make cheese toast.  That SmartOnes quesadilla looks good- I am going to try that!!

  • Eeek!  Yes, cereal makes my numbers go crazy, too!  I generally eat two slices of Healthy Life bread (12 net grams of carbs for 2 slices) with two eggs and some cheese.  It takes about 5 minutes to make in the morning, and I usually make it into an egg sandwich, which would be easy to take with you.

If you don't think you'll even have 5 minutes to make yourself breakfast, you could try making something ahead of time.  My favorite is scrambled egg cups. Just mix together a dozen eggs, about 1/2 cup of milk, and salt and pepper.  Fill each cup of a muffin pan about 2/3 of the way full with chopped deli ham and shredded cheese, mushrooms, any other veggies you want, and then pour the egg mixture over the top.  Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes.  These are really easy to pop into the microwave in the morning and eat on a toasted whole wheat English muffin or some toast and they're great for on the go.

Otherwise, for a quick breakfast, I sometimes do cottage cheese and a Fiber Plus bar (I love the Caramel Coconut Fudge ones - they taste just like Girl Scout Cookies Samoas).  I've also found that Toaster Strudel makes breakfast pastries that are delicious and only 15 grams of carbs per pastry, so I usually can eat two.  My favorite are the egg, sausage and cheese ones, and they're quick, so you can just pop them in the toaster while you're getting ready.

That's all I can really think of right now.  I hope this helps!

  • I usually eat one whole grain waffle with peanut butter on top.  I've even splured with syrup & have been ok...not great, but it was a nice little treat.

Anytime I have cereal my numbers go through the roof.  I've tried several times & for some reason cereal of any type is no good for me.

  • I have been struggling with breakfast every morning since day one.  I usually like eating cereal or fruit.  With a GD diet, there's no way to go around the max of 30g of carbs.  I usually have some kind of carb (1-2 slices whole wheat bread or 1 english muffin) and 2 scrambled eggs.  I've been doing this since JULY!  I got sick and tired of the same thing and finally got the nerve to try cheerios this morning.  BIG mistake!  I went to 217!

So I vowed to never stray away from my normal breakfast - bread and eggs. =(  My husband made me a breakfast burrito once, but got major heartburn.
