Anyone have to go through genetic counseling? I have to go for the first time this week and very nervous about going. Any words on what to expect or positive thoughts about this?
I have, just recently. We went in because DH and I recently found out we are both carriers of cystic fibrosis.
The genetic counselor will go over your family / medical history and talk to you about testing options. They are generally the ones that give you results of any genetic testing you have.
I think it also really depends on why you are going and if you are already pregnant or not. Our genetic counselor was a great resource for us.
Don't be nervous! It consists of creating a mutually agreed upon agenda, reviewing medical and family history, reason you are being seen and creating a plan for follow up based on your wants.
I'm a genetic counselor and most of us are pretty nice (I think!).
I had to go in after they saw that dd has a larger then normal nucel fold (6mm, and 6mm is the cut off) I had conseling and then had a level 2 u/s.
It was a lot of discussion about family medical history. The lady was so nice. The only bad part was that dh was working out of town, so my mom came with me. It was a little hard giving dh's family history (especially since his dad is adopted so we aren't fully sure there) but overall it was a good experience. DD still has a 1% chance of downs in my situation, but the conseling definately helped.
Good luck, I'm sure everything will work out alright for you!
The genetic counselor at our hospital has been very helpful. It started with just sitting down with her to discuss our testing options after our baby was found to be almost two weeks small at our 12 week ultrasound. Then as we did the NT scan and quad screen, she has always followed up on results of both the ultrasound and bloodwork. Today, she helped us through the difficult decision of whether we wanted to do amnio. Its been a very helpful experience. Especially since I found her to kind of be a more neutral source of information over my doctors who were pro maximum testing in all situations...
