2nd Trimester

Missing kidney on anatomy scan

I normally lurk because I've been petrified of losing this baby due to a previous m/c.  Anyway, I had my anatomy scan at 18 weeks 1 day and after much searching they were only able to see one kidney.

I spoke with the doc and he said it could be just too early or it could be in the pelvis, etc, etc.  If there is only one my fluid levels (baby's bladder & amnio fluid) looked good so the other one is functioning well.  So now I'm schedule to come back in 3 weeks to look again.  However, in the meantime I had my regular ob/gyn appt and she said there's zero chance they are going to find another kidney...let the freaking out begin.

Has anyone had a similiar experience and what was the outcome?  Both docs said people live all the time on one kidney but of course I want things to be perfect.

Re: Missing kidney on anatomy scan

  • I'm sorry to hear that. We have a friend who is 28 and just had an xray because he was in a car accident. He was fine but the Dr. said "Oh by the way do you know you only have one kidney?"...... he had no idea and he has had no problems only having one kidney. Good luck!

  • People live their whole lives never knowing they don't have a 2nd kidney.  Anatomically speaking it's just a backup anyway.  Which is why you can donate one and still be perfectly fine yourself.  Don't worry about it unless your doctor tells you there is actually something to be concerned about.  So far everything they are telling you at this point is GOOD news.  As long as the one the baby has is fine then it's just something they'll keep on file in the baby's medical record and monitor if they feel necessary.

  • I went for a sonogram with my first son on his due date for a sizing sonogram...since he was measuring big.  They discovered...on his due date...that he had a pelvic kidney.  I guess at 20 weeks they either didn't catch it or they may have not ascended yet...who knows.

The only reason they said this could be useful information if he one day had to have an xray or went for surgery and they did an xray of his pelvis, his kidney could be mistaken for a mass.

Anyway, when he was born they took an xray of his pelvis (i think) just to make sure it was there and when he was one month old around he went in for a test to make sure both kidneys were working properly.

Neither my pediatrician nor the radiologist that did my scan on my due date were alarmed at all by this..and said it was actually common but most people are unaware.

I now have a healthy and happy 18 month old boy and another one on the way in July (and at my last sonogram I actually asked about this babies kidneys and they are both in the correct place!)  Needless to say, my husband and I frequently forget our son has a pelvic kidney and one day will make an interesting ice breaker story for my son at camp!

  • Thank you everyone for your responses-they definitely help!  I think it's the 3 week wait that's gonna drive me nuts.
  • Try not to worry! My mom only has one kidney and is alive and kickin' at nearly 60. :)

  • well odd as this is- my aunt was born with one kidney. she just found out when she went in to have surgery ( at the age of fifty-something). she said her doctor told her its not super common, but it is not unheard of either. i hope that brings some comfort.

try not to get worried ( easier said than done). the drs will monitor you and the babe... thinking of you!

  • It sounds like no big deal from all the other replies, I am surprised though that they said there was zero chance of finding it the second time. There were two or three things the tech couldn't see during my anatomy scan, though I only remember one of those which was a hand. I've since seen both hands at an elective ultrasound so I know he has two.

I guess I'm just saying I thought it was common for certain things to be missed and require a second ultrasound. Either way, I don't think you have to worry.  =)
