Lactation Consultant rec needed

Hi- does anyone have a LC they can recommend? Any success stories? Also, if you used one, did you go to her office or have a housecall? My LO is 9 days old & I can't get him to bf. He has been getting a bottle of formula & pumped milk since we were in the hospital but I'd really like to ebf. Any advice is appreciated! TIA!

  • Cheryl at Special Addition.  She saved our BFing relationship.  I love her.  I believe that she will make house calls, but we went into her office at Special Addition.

Us too.  She was great and followed up too.  She charges extra, quite a bit, to do a home visit, but maybe now it might be worth it if you are tired.

  • Another rec for Cheryl! I saw her with Rhett and again with the twins. She is awesome! We went to her both times but we live way out in the Hill Country.

  • If Cheryl is out of your price range, you can try calling the hospital you gave birth at and talk to their LC or ask your pediatrician who they recommend (ours has one on staff but she's not nearly as helpful as I've heard Cheryl is). If you need to sell the cost of such a great LC to your DH, have him compare to the price of formula for the next 12 months and I think a visit to her probably makes sense! =)

  • Great- thank you all so much. We went to a breastfeeding class, talked to an LC at the hospital, so we both thought we were prepared. Unfortunately it's not as easy as it sometimes looks. So, for those who used Cheryl- was one visit enough to help?

Funny you should say that! He just asked me how expensive an LC is & thinks that she's going to tell us what we were already told. I hope we are successful!
  • Cheryl was expensive- $150- and at the time that amount seemed like a lot.  Looking back, I would have happily paid twice that.  The lactation consultant at the hospital I delivered at had me in tears.  We left Kate's one week appointment and she had lost a lot of weight so we were getting a lot of pressure to supplement.  DH went to Special Addition to buy an SNS so we could supplement with expressed milk at the breast and booked us an appointment to see Cheryl.  Cheryl called to check on me while DH was driving home.  I seriously love that woman.

She weighed Kate before and after nursing to see how much milk she was getting and helped us with her latch and how to position her.  She also set us up with a pumping/ SNS/ BFing schedule which made all the difference for us.  I actually ended up with an oversupply problem.  :)

She then called us for several weeks to check on us and helped me with many other concerns over the phone.  I also had her phone number and called her once with a question.  That $150 is probably the best $150 I have ever spent.

This X1000. Cheryl spends at least an hour with you, if not more. She checks positioning, latch, weight. She is AMAZING! She follows up mulitple times as well.

I contacted her at 9 months when I had a huge supply dip and she called me back within 10 minutes with advice and encouragement. She followed up with me a few days later to make sure everything was okay.

    She is awesome!

  • We went through a similar situation.  Nothing can prepare you - knowing what to do and doing it are entirely two different things.  We used this woman:

Donna L Cordoba, RN, BSN, IBCLC
    The Nursing Corner

    3404 Barker Hollow Pass
    Austin, Texas 78739
    Tel: (512) 750-8524
    Email: DonnaC@austin.rr.com

And I recommend her as well! Our daughter was losing a lot of weight as well, and we did have to give her formula a couple times, but I worked with Donna (and it was.not.easy!!!) because it was really important to me to BF.  Aside from Donna, a nipple shield was HUGELY helpful (oh and a whole bunch of herbs and eventually domperidone).

Good luck!  If we can help further, please let us know!

  • Another rec for Cheryl!!! She saved us, and it wasn't that expensive. The LC at NAMC that worked with us sucked. The nurses gave me better advice/help. I can guarantee you will pay Cheryl, she will help you, and you'll think, "I would've paid 5 times that!"

    Good Luck!

  • Cheryl is so great!  She really takes the time to help, show you proper position and then watch you practice and give tips.  I puffy heart her!

I never had to go in for a consultation but I had a great experience with her as well.  I left my number at Special Addition saying I wanted to set up a consult and when she called me back she listened to my issues/concerns and helped me set up a plan all without even having to set foot in her office and for free.  She said to try it for a week and if I felt it wasn't working then we could set up a consult.  GL!

  • We loved Donna Cordoba.  She only does home visits and an added benefit is that she is nurse that also does labor and delivery and newborn care.  We saw several consultants in the hospital and got mixed messages.  Donna came over and made everything so easy.  She is very knowledgeable and wants to check in on  you daily.  She helped a friend of mine when her baby was 8 months old and teething.  She is great in understanding the cognitive growth and development of babies.  My husband calls her the baby whisper.
  • We used Donna too.  She was wonderful.  She saved my breastfeeding.  It helps that she is also a nurse.
