Breastfeeding

nursing only on one breast..pumping the other?

anyone do this?  this was suggested to me since my left nipple is always sore and messed up.

will it effect my milk supply if i only nurse him on my right?

my LO has jaundice and i pump so that i can keep track of his intake so i am giving him 2 oz of BM and 1 oz of formula afterwards.

i would like to just breastfeed but i am so worried that he is not getting enough when he is on the boob.

also if i only nurse from the right nipple should i increase the time he is there to the full 30 minutes instead of the 15 minute switch nipple routine since i am doing only one nipple?

TIA

Re: nursing only on one breast..pumping the other?

  • You can try pumping that side for a while to let your body know you need the milk, and it will help that nipple to heal. But to have the best supply you can, you need to let baby nurse from that side as soon as you are in less pain. The baby is much more efficient than a pump and will help your supply. If he is having enough wet and dirty diapers, then he is getting enough, but try to follow his cues rather than watching the clock for how long he's been eating. He'll let you  know if he's still hungry and you can either try nursing from the other side, or give him some of the expressed milk in a bottle. Good luck!

  • I do that sometimes because overnight I have too much supply and LO would not be able to fully relieve me on both sides. Sure enough I'll get 3-4oz out of the unused side, so I know LO is probably also getting around that much from the other side.

Yes you should increase the time if your LO is only nursing on one side. I'd more than double it, because I find the flow is slower as the breast empties (even taking let-down into account).

  • definitely increase the amount of pumping on the side you aren't using. I also had sore/painful Left nipple with DD and would feed her on the right and pump the left...didn't pump as much as I should have and got a clogged milk duct that lead to mastitis.  The MD actually told me to try and let baby nurse from Left side as much as I could tolerate, cause that would help clear the mastitis with the antibiotics and decrease the chances of it happening again!  Hope this helps!
