Moving to a toddler bed?

Hi Ladies,

I'm mostly a lurker but had a question. I'm having my 2nd DD in July. My first will be 18 months when she's born. I'm contemplating whether or not I should be purchasing a 2nd crib or if my DD may be getting ready for a toddler bed then. Has anyone moved to the toddler bed yet?

Everything I read says not to move your child from the crib until they are absolutly ready. I probably won't move DD into a bed utnil she can get out of the crib. We are planning another baby soon and if I get pg right away, we will probably just buy the new baby a new crib.

We moved DS to a toddler bed at 22 months because we will need the crib for DD. The transition was a piece of cake for us.

My DD is (nearly) 18 months, and we have another one due in July. We bought DD a twin bed, and placed it on the floor in her room - and she LOVES it. We've been doing naps on it during the weekends. In a few months, we'll completely tansition to the bed.

The new baby will most likely be in the pack n play in our room until he/she is 5-6 months due to feeding schedules, so if she doesn't do the transition well, we have 10 months to get her on track.

We had to move DS out of his crib about a month ago because he suddenly got very good at climbing out. I don't think he's really ready for a toddler bed but the only other option I've heard of is a crib tent and I can't imagine him tolerating that.

FWIW, we probably would have just moved him to a regular bed but some friends gave us their son's old toddler bed.

My second is due June 1st and DD will be about 16.5 months old. I went ahead and moved her into a toddler bed three weeks ago.

I wouldn't move your DD unless she shows signs that she is ready. My DD was 18mo when she started to resist her crib. She stopped STTN, and was sleeping like a newborn again- up every 1-3hrs crying. CIO didn't work anymore. So we switched her and she has been great ever since.

Something else to consider also if you plan to have DC2 in your rm or a basinet or other like items. If you plan to do that then you may not need the 2nd crib between the age at birth and the age at time to move new baby to the crib. At that time you may beable to talk DC1 into shopping for a "big sib" bed.
