When I started running again I used the C25K program and I highly recommend it. If you have an iPhone you can download an app to use thats really helpful. GL!

Don't do what I did and just decide one day you are going to run a 5k without any type of training. I did it yesterday and finished (even pushed DS in his stroller!), but I hurt today. Not one of my brighter ideas.

Definitely this!

Start slow-- a mile for a week or so, then two for a week, 3 for a week... you get the idea. It is better to begin slowly, but stick with it. If you are just starting I might do a rest day where I just walked once or twice a week, too.
In addition to finding a training plan, here's what I tell people:
1. Go purchase something fun/cute that you only get to wear while running. A cute tanktop, running skirt, funky headband, etc. No one wants to waste money, and who doesn't love wearing new things?
2. Inform your family that this will be a priority in your schedule, and you need their support. As a mom, it's so easy to get pulled in a million directions. Have a set time to go and stick with it.
3. Purchase decent shoes if you don't have them. The #1 reason people don't complete their first running goal is because of injury. Small or large, it's a huge dissappointment to have to stop training.
4. Rope as many people into this as possible. Even if it's just telling them you're doing it and having them wish you good luck. You're more likely to follow through if others are holding you accountable. Plus, there's nothing better than crossing the finish line to the cheers of family and friends. (I still dream of racing by my kids holding a Go Mommy Go! sign.)

Re: Beginner runner needs advice
Love C25K! Helped me when I was a beginner.
Awesome goal! Sign up now and get your training program mapped out so you can stick to it and see how realistic it really is
Runner's World has a good training program for beginners and there are plenty others online like C25K.
Good luck!!
