My Anatomy scan was yesterday afternoon. We thought everything went well except the u/s tech couldn't get measurements on the baby's spine because of how he was laying. She said we may need to come back later to get the measurements. We also found out our LO is a boy-- DH is thrilled.
Today, I got a call from my Dr letting me know that our baby's femur bone was measuring short. She said it is a marker for Down's but could be normal if we were both short. I'm 5'8" and DH is 6'2" - we both come from tall families.
She couldn't give us more information but referred us to a genetic specialist. DH and I chose not to do prior genetic testing but we still have the option of doing the Quad screen now. Our appointment with the specialist is scheduled for the 24th and we will know more information then.
I feel in the dark about our test results & the risk for Down's... DH doesn't want to talk about it until we know more information. I don't know what to think. We will continue with the pregnancy even if our son has Down's but I'm terrified at the thought of it. We are not prepared to deal with a child with mental & physical disabilities. I'm so scared right now.
I'll let everyone know next week once I find out more info.
Re: Bad news at Anatomy scan... T&P needed
I'm so sorry for your news. I hope that everything goes well at your appointment with the genetic specialist next week. You'll definitely be in my thoughts and prayers.
I also want to say congrats on your little boy! No matter what happens, I'm sure he'll be the most wonderful little boy and he will be lucky to be yours.
You and LO will be in my prayers. I hope you can get some answers soon.
I wanted to say congratulations on your little boy and that I'm so sorry you had to receive scary news along with the good.
My T & P are with you and DH - I hope you get answers very soon. {hugs}
Thoughts and good vibes to you and your family. I'm sorry you have to go through this stressful time.
Hugs and good thoughts to you!
I hope it works out for the best.
Please know though that this is relatively common. My hospital sends out a handbook and one section covers "What if's of the anatomy scan." It said that a short femur is a "soft" marker for Down's but if there's no other signs chances are you're clear as the femur is a) hard to measure b) grows in spurts c) often is one of the last bones to catch up.
My first born had this, but it was only a big deal because there were like four other issues present. I don't say this to scare you but because my own dr. told me he wouldn't have thought twice about it otherwise.
Keep your hopes up. Thoughts & prayers for you and your lil' one
My nephew was considered a potential Down's baby up until the day he was born due to short femur measurements (they forwent any additional testing afterwards). He was born 100% healthy!
T&P!!! Is there any way the tech was measuring you as if you were 20 weeks? Just trying to think of another explanation. Maybe LO is just a little behind and the tech was being extra cautious with measurements.
Hang in there and keep us posted!
I'm sorry you're in this limbo.
Hugs.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
T&P to you - I can't imagine the anxiety you must feel. Please know we're all here for you if your DH is unwilling to talk about it.
Also - I recommend calling the specialist and seeing if you can get on a cancellation list - and then following up every couple of days. I have been pleasantly surprised more than once at how easy it is to get in to see a doctor early if you're persistent.
Please keep us posted -
