Postpartum Depression

Effexor, should I up my dosage?

Hi ladies.. I haven't posted here in a while, but I had terrible PPD and PPA when DS was first born. I went back on Effexor, 75mg a day, and it started helping a ton. I had taken Effexor before I got pregnant, off and on, for regular depression.

Well, I am starting to feel down in the dumps again. All I want to do is sleep, work stresses me out and depresses me. I can't really enjoy DS like I want to. So I'm wondering if I should maybe try upping my dosage? Has anyone used Effexor and gone up a dose and felt a benefit from it? TIA!!!!

Re: Effexor, should I up my dosage?

  • I was on Effexor years ago after an ectopic pregnancy.  I was only on it for a few months, and never upped my dosage.  My first recommendation is to talk to your Dr.  I wouldn't up a dosage without talking to your Dr. first - it can have very harmful side effects.  I know there was a time on my Zoloft when there was a lot going on in my life and stressing me out that it didn't seem like it was helping me out all that much.  But, then I would imagine what I would be like if I didn't have it at all.  If upping the dosage doesn't need to be done at this point, maybe some counselling?  Just another option.  GL!

  • I have been taking Effexor XR for the past 11 years. Tongue Tied

I take it for anxiety, and it works well for me. Several times in the past 11 years I have gone off of the medicine cold turkey (NOT recommended). I have also gone up to 150 mgs. several times. Eventually I want to wean off of the medication, but I feel much better on it than I do when I'm not on it.

I would recommend talking to your doctor. Never change your meds otherwise. For me, during the times when I was feeling bad enough to increase my dosage, I went up to the 150 for a little bit, and when life got a little easier, I went back down to 75. I've personally found that while being at a higher dose made me feel a little better, it also made me more tired.

  • I have gone up and down on my dosage over the last 7 years depending on what was going on in my life. I am at my best at 150mg, but right now I am TTC and am on 35 (half the lowest dose).

When I was teaching in a classroom, I was on 225 because I was so stressed and hated my job.

I would ask the Dr., but going up might not be a bad idea.
