Formula Question

I am hoping someone can give me some information about formula consumption. If we plan to switch to formula around 2-3 months (possibly sooner), how much will we go through? Like a 24 oz (not sure on the sizes) can will last...a week, a few days, longer? I'm guessing it varies based on the baby and his/her age, but I'm just looking for an estimate. TIA!

Re: Formula Question

  • I switched Annabelle over to all formula at 3 months and it took about a week to go through one can of formula. But that also depends on how much they drinking (oz) and how many times a day. I made sure that I bought 24oz or larger. Have you signed up for coupons online yet? Those coupons were a life saver. And if you have friends that use a different brand I would trade coupons with them.

  • Usually a large can (i think 25ish oz) will last about a week for me if i'm using it fulltime for every feeding of formula.
  • At that age, I went through a little less than a large can a week.  I originally used Enfamil Gentlease (gas formula) but I switched to Target brand at some point.

I normally tried to keep at the current can and one extra can around at all time.

  • We switched to formula at 3 months old, and at that point, DS would drink 24-30 oz/day (4-5 oz at each feeding, and 6 feedings a day). Around 4.5 months, he kept the same feeding schedule but started to demand 5-6 oz, so his consumption was typically 30-35 oz/day until we started solids on a regular basis w/him at 5.5 months. At that point, he started doing 24 oz/day (6 oz at each feeding, and 4 feedings a day), plus an additional 2-3 oz/day that was mixed w/his cereal to get it to the right consistency. Now, at 7.5 months, he's still at that amount.

We buy the big cans of it (and the "bonus size" when we can find them of Good Start), and go through 1 can every week and a half or so. I always stockpile when I've got checks and coupons, too. Sign up on Gerber's, Similac's, and Enfamil's websites and they'll mail you coupons and checks. If they're not the brand you need, then the Swap Spot board has been highly successful for me in trading for the ones I need, so it's worth it to have the coupons for even the brands you don't use. We've also tried Target and WalMart brand of formulas and been happy w/both, so that's a cheaper option, too.
  • Do you belong to BJ's or Costco?  You can save lots of money on formula by buying there.  Also, the store brand is the same as the name brand and it much much cheaper.
  • At 3 months, we were on straight formula and DD was taking anywhere between 4-6 oz., 5x/day.

  • DD has been formula fed from the start.  At three months, she was eating 4 oz. every three hours.  She usually had 5-6 bottles a day for a total of 20-24 oz. per day.  Right around that time though, we bumped her up to 5 oz. per bottle, and she still took the same number of bottles per day, just with more in them.  A tub (DD is on Enfamil AR) usually lasts about a week and a half.  HTH!
