Lil help for new BFing mom on the edge...

Like literally ready to put my darling DD down at 4a and throw myself out the window. Ok not really. But she just does not want to go back to sleep after I feed her at night. Shes kind of fussy and squirmy. She'll fall asleep in my arms and the 2nd I lay her down - wide awake. She's up abt every 3 hours to eat and dh has been trying to pick up one of the feedings (been pumping once a day). But honestly, bless his heart, between her fussing when she wakes up and him taking what feels like 13 years to heat up the damn bottle, and him fumbling through trying to get her back to sleep...I'd rather just wake up and feed her myself. During the day she's starting to stay awake for abt an hour at a time and she's very pleasant and calm, no fussing. Why just at night??

Any ideas ???? Idk if maybe she has some gas? She tends to fuss a little - even take a pacifier from time to time which makes me think maybe she's still hungry?? This is my first time around with exclusive breast feeding and I give you 2nd time moms that have done this before a million props cause it is HARD! Maybe what I'm eating is giving her gas? I'm home alone now and not eating a whole lot, maybe she's not getting what she needs?

  • Like you mentioned, I would definitely look at what you are eating. I know I made the mistake of making Cajun Chicken Alfredo...yeah, DD was not a fan...so I paid for it with fussiness.

Does she act like this after the breast or bottle feeding? My other thought would be maybe there is not enough in the bottle.

I'm no expert though! This is my first rodeo too. I FF'd my son.

  • re christina: Me too! I FFed ds too. I had spaghetti with wheat pasta and a couple turkey balls. Maybe the tomatoes??  It happens after breast and bottle at night.

Anyone have ideas abt what foods DON'T cause gas? I've read some posts on what does (sometimes a lot) ...but not on what doesn't. I know every baby is different but any ideas are appreciated :)

  • That sounds so good right now. I swear I am eating more now than when I was pregnant. Could be the tomatoes...hard to tell though, right?

    I found this article...

But, it doesn't really mention specific foods that do not cause gas. I just found it to be helpful.

  • She doesn't yet get the concept of night/day I am guessing. It is very normal! I would bet it doesn't have anything to do with what you are eating at this point. She just doesn't get it yet that after eating at night, it's time to go back to sleep!

I would just keep things as dark as you can, keep her warm and cozy after eating, make sure she has a clean diaper, and maybe add in some white noise. As we speak the fan in our bathroom is on and DD is sleeping in my room. Who knows if it really helps, but it can't hurt!

Ya know I did consider the night and day thing, but for a while she was staying up more during the day so I thought maybe she'd been getting the hang of it. Maybe your right, and the white noise thing is a good idea.

  • Do you swaddle? Maybe after you feed and burp her, you could try a nice tight swaddle? Check out the book the Happiest Baby on the Block it talks about swaddling and other soothing things for babies!! It may have nothing to do with the actual nursing/milk and just that she needs to feel secure. My DD co-sleeps, so she generally just falls back to sleep with us after she nurses, but if that's not what you're doing swaddling is another great option!!

  • Day/night confusion is what it sounds like.  We are going through the EXACT same thing!  That 2-3 am feeding is killing me.  Like you, we were on the right track and she seemed to be doing well with day/night, but then the past few days have proved the opposite.  I guess that's just life with a newborn?

  • potatoes, carrots, most non-green veggies don't cause gas- neither do fruits. be warned- citrus fruits can cause fussiness. meats, white bread, avocado, iceberg lettuce and a vinaigrette are fine. white rice is fine.

i suggest eating foods that don't cause gas for 3 days straight and then try one food a day, before lunch time- like a glass of milk. it takes about 8 hours for a food to effect your breastmilk, so you can back track to find if it makes your baby gassy/fussy. if it does, nix it off your diet for a few weeks and try it again later. today i'm going to try sweet tea and see if she handles that well. (mostly the caffeine.) i'll know by dinner time tonight if it's negatively effected her.

  • Our little guy was doing the same thing.  I found giving him a little mylicon before bed and putting the vibration setting on his bassinett made a world of difference!  Even if he starts to stir a little we'll put the vibration on and he'll pass right back out.  Good luck I know how frustrating it can be

  • This is exactly what has been happening with us too. We gave him some gripe water the last 2 nights before bed and it has actually made a world of difference. Not sure if he has painful gas or is day night confused or what. Also last night we gave him a warm bath with the nighttime lavender bubble bath and he was immediately calmed down after that. With the gripe water drops and the bath last night he slept from 1230-4am, 430-630, 7-930.

    good luck :/
