Parenting after 35

Developmental Assessment

Simon had his developmental assessment today by the Early Intervention case workers and their findings were as follows:

Gross Motor Development: 21-22 Months
Play age: 21 months
Receptive Language: 15-18 months
Expressive Language: 6-9 months

Great, so a 10 month old talks better than my 16 month old!  They said there's an unknown cause for his speech delay but because he's more than 1/3 delayed he qualifies for speech therapy and the state pays for it up to age 3 as long as our insurance doesn't cover it.  The speech therapist will come to our house once a week to work with us.  They'll start in 2 weeks after his surgery.

Re: Developmental Assessment

  • That is great to have that resource. Good for you for having him evaluated so young. He may surprise you (and his speech therapist) and start talking after his surgery. Would not surprise me at all!

Wow, check out his gross motor/play age! Makes sense to me with the way he climbs on his doggies :-)

  • But on the good side his gross motor, play age and receptive language are at or above age.  You will love early intervention.  Having them come to the house makes everything so much easier.

  • I'm so sorry, but the good news is that he's advanced in his motor skills and on target for his receptive language, so it seems to me like the therapist should be able to work wonders with him :)

  • And I just realized my pp sounds glib. I didn't mean it to be :(

  • Well, he's got some work to do, but I'm sure he'll do great!  Good luck!

  • I'm so glad you were proactive and had the evaluation. Your mama instincts were good and because you followed them, Simon will catch up in no time I'm sure! I can understand if you have mixed emotions, but hopefully any long term worries will be alleviated as he starts working with a speech therapist.

  • Right on!  So he listens, but doesn't talk much.  Cool that you get the state to pay for therapy until he's 3!  I don't think he'll need it for that long, somehow.  :)

  • He is only 16 months old - is he supposed to talk at this age? Jason didn't speak until he was 2. Now he is speaking in two languages.

I know, I hear that from a lot of people that their kids didn't talk till they were 2.  But I'm sure Jason was at least saying "mama" in context before then, which supposedly babies should do before they're a year old.  Also, it's more than just that Simon has no words (and they told me that "uh-oh" does NOT count as a word), he isn't attempting to imitate words or even sounds.  And for some reason they found it relevant that he doesn't try to sing or make noise to music that he likes to dance to.  Even if it's too early to worry, it can't hurt to try to encourage speech at this point.

  • Ditto Kari and Catherine.

Really, a delay in expressive speech seems perfectly reasonable. I think it's great he is getting no cost, AT HOME, speech therapy. I would imagine it's so much more effective in his own environment where he is comfortable and you don't even have to leave the house = awesome!!! I bet his speech will catch up very quickly after his surgery.

And WOW! at his gross motor and play development!
