Re: relocated from nyc to lake nona

  • Hi yj!

I just found out i was pregnant on Sunday anf confirmed it yesterday at a doctor's appointment! First off, congratulations and welcome to Florida! It IS a big move, but we hope that you will love it. I live right by the airport, so you and I are pretty close! I haven't seen any ladies talk about an upcoming get together but i think that would be fanstatic! Do you have any doctors here or are you still looking?

  • congrats on the news! your due date is a day after my birthday!  october babies are the best! thanks for the kind words. i am beyond overwhelmed w/the move, first pregnancy...we have been wanting to leave nyc for a while now, but now that the day has come, it seems i find myself missing it more and more! not knowing a soul in orlando after being surrounded by family and friends is going to be the toughest transition of all - that and driving again!  i would love to get any dr recommendations, as i am due for a checkup soon and have no idea where to begin! thanks.
  • I can definitely understand how you feel! We actually moved to Orlando to be closer to Family!

As far as Dr. recommendations, I work in Celebration (town close to Disney) and have gone to an OBGYN there because I plan to give birth at Celebration Hospital. Their website is: www.aplaceforwomen.net  i think... it is Dr. Balint and Dr. Swoboda. Check out their website and see if you are interested in maybe meeting with them. They have been really nice thus far. I know it sounds like a ways out, but if you take the 417 all the way down to Celebration exit, it's only about 20 minutes. If you need anything else, let me know :)

  • Welcome! I live south of Lake Nona in St. Cloud. I am from upstate NY, but I have been living in Florida for almost 11 years. This is the office I have been going to all these years. https://www.obandgyn.cc/ they deliver babies at Winnie Palmer. I had my son there almost 3 years ago and loved the experience there.
  • Welcome to Orlando!

I also live in the Lake Nona area.  It's great here, we moved here about 7 years ago.

Look at Docs that deliver at Winnie Palmer hospital (most fo them do)...it is considered one of the best birthing hospital in the nation.  My parents in Texas actual read about it in their local Dallas newspaper and asked if we were delivering there (which we are)...shows how great they are if they're getting national press for their baby and mom care.  I fell blessed that we live in the area to be able to deliver there.

I go to the Women's Center OBGYN...but didn't like the main doc (Dr. Gearity in Hunter's Creek), but they have other locations, I changed to Dr. Vega in the Orlando office...right across the street from Winnie Palmer. I love him and his staff.

    Good Luck.

  • oh where in upstate ny are you from?  my husband and i are originally from ithaca and lived in nyc for 10 years, so we're more truly central new yorkers!  how was the transition for you when you moved to FL?

thanks for the recommendation, leaving my amazing dr in nyc was pretty difficult.  i just took a virtual tour of the winnie palmer hospital, and it looks amazing!  looking to take some prenatal classes there as well.  did you do any of those?

would love any advice on general things to do in the orlando area as well!

I just finished my prenatal classes last week...they we good. They're run by the hospital but are conducted in a different building...down a few blocks on Orange Ave. I wan't crazy about the instructor...I think a different one would have been better. But since I have nothing to compare it too...they might have be really good :) And when you sign up for the classes there are several more for free you can take...I start those (infant care and BFing) in the next few week.  My next few are actually going to be held in the hospital...we'll see how those go.

Check out the Winter Park area...specifically Park Ave.  There are some good restaurants and fun shopping up there.  Great casual/nice hangout, people watching, dogs everywhere kinda place. I love it down there.

I lived in Hoosick Falls, NY for high school. It is near Albany. I went to college in Potsdam. It was def different when I first moved here, but I moved here from a very small town.

I did take a few classes from Winnie. As the pp said the main class to take is not held at the actual hospital. I loved our instructor she was awesome. I also took any other classes that I could. I did the breastfeeding class and that was at the hospital. 3 years ago if you signed up and paid for the main birth class all the other ones were free.

There are so many things to do around here. It just depends on what you are interested in.

There are two sets of outlets on International Drive. There is Florida Mall and the Mall at Millenia.

We love mini golfing at Disney at the Winter/Summerland course.  We have annual passes and go to the parks a lot. You can walk around Downtown Disney for free. Ghiradelli is there.

You can head out to the Kennedy Space Center at the coast.

There are a lot of great state parks. Blue Springs and Wekvia Springs.

In Winter Park there used to be a great little boat tour to go on. Always fun to walk around downtown Winter Park.

I could go on and on. So I will stop.

thanks so much for all the suggestions!  we have been doing our best to explore the area - hit up both the outlet malls (are they always that crazy w/people and parking?!) went to ikea at the mall of millennia, and been to winter park twice now!  we also checked out the lake eola farmers market.  there definitely seem to be an infinite number of things to explore!

ithaca was a very small town as well, so the transition to new york city at first was a little tough.  but with everything so accessible and all our friends also in the city, it was easier in that respect.  i'm just starting to get used to the concept of having to drive everywhere, and all the space here!

  • Welcome to the area! Hope your pregnancy is going well!

We live in Lake Nona (Northlake Park) and have a 10 month old... Where in Lake Nona are you? We moved to Lake Nona last July and I've been wanting to connect with other moms around here so we can maybe get to know others at the park, etc... :)

Do you have a pediatrician picked out? I've been using Treehouse Pediatrics and are really happy with them!

  • Welcome to Orlando :-) We live by Lake Nona in Eagle Creek. I see that you want to meet other moms, go to MEETUP.COM there's a Sassy Lake Nona Moms, Eagle Creek Mommies, Orlando Mommy & Me playgroup and so many more. They have a lot of meetups :D

My pediatrician is Tree House Pediatrics in the Publix Plaza and OBGYN is Norman Lamberty in Physicians Associates Lee Vista & Chickasaw Trail.
