BF mom's and weight loss

Is anyone having trouble shedding the baby weight? I started a birth control (Jolivette) which is notorious for people gaining weight on but I know that you're suppose to increase you calorie intake while BF to help with milk supply. I also haven't had the most time to workout either but I try to do lunges and get some walking in from time to time. How am I suppose to lose the weight if I'm increasing my caloric intake? I guess maybe I should make it healthier calories but after being on such a strict carb diet while pregnant it's hard to not eat more carbs...plus, that's where all the calories are.

  • I just try to eat well and only when I'm hungry. Pre-preg I had to eat less than 1500 to lose, now I eat 1800 or so and it's coming off sloooowly.

  • Yeah, I don't intentionally eat more calories. I just try to eat healthy and only eat when I'm hungry. I'm pretty convinced BFing doesn't help lose weight, at least not for me.

I agree, I think it's a load of b.s.  It's wishful thinking though! Tongue Tied

  • I didn't start  losing weight until I stopped BF'ing when LO was 4 months and I went back to work...
  • If you make healthy choices and take in only about 300 more calories a day (like when you are pregnant) you will lose about 1 lb a week.  You burn about 500 calories a day making the milk, that is why you are supposed to increase the caloric intake. They say do not lose more than that while breastfeeding or it will hurt your milk supply.  I started Weight watchers at the beginning of the year and they help breastfeeding moms.  I have lost 10 lbs since the beginning of the year.  It will come off slowly.
  • I think BFing contributed to the weight loss, but I don't think it's the only thing. A combo of BFing, eating well and exercising helped me, and I've been on BC since 1 mo post-prego.

I don't count calories, eat tons of healthy food plus bad ones every once in a while. I began the P90X at around 6 mo post and that jump started my weight loss. I've lost 30 lbs since prego, and have 10 lbs to go.

  • I think breastfeeding helped me lose weight once ds was a bit older - maybe 3ish months.  I don't know if it was because he was drinking more by then, but the weight starting melting off and I was eating a ton at the same time.

  • I cut my calories after DD was born and BF for 15 months.... I didn't need extra calories to produce milk... i just ate healthy... kept a food journal and exercise is key!  I dropped all of the weight plus some.... then soon as I quit i immediately dropped another 5 pounds ( i think bc your body reserves some xtra fat to make the milk)  unfortunately it's just a long slow process... keep it up and try to remind yourself you will have to make some lifestyle changes as well if you really want the weight to come off...
  • Still 9 lbs to go to get to my prepregnancy weight.  I also don't think BF helps you lose weight, I didn't reach my pre-preg weight the first time until one month after I stopped breast feeding.  I try to remember it's a slow process and even a pound a week is a good number.

  • I didn't start to lose the last 10 lbs. until I quit BFing at 7 mos. I gained 50 total during pregnancy though (I am 5'6" 125 lbs) It ended up taking a full year after DD was born for me to lose all the weight and tone up to where I was pre-preg. It seemed like 10 years though! Good luck it is a slow process but if you are dedicated it is totally do-able.
