How do you put LO down for a nap?

I have no clue how to get DD to go down for a nap without her swing during the day. She usually goes down for 2-3 naps during the day depending on how long the nap/awake time lasts (I try to put her down after no more than 1-2 hrs awake time, watching for sleepy signals, etc).  So.... usually it goes nap, feed, play, down for another nap.

Unfortunately I've been relying on the swing to put her to sleep.  Starting around 5 weeks or so she wouldn't sleep anywhere else, so I just got into the habit.  She'll sit in it awake for about 5-10 mins and then falls asleep.  She just seems so "awake" at that time, but I know she needs to go down due to the tired signs. She would generally doze off while BFing, but I don't know if I should be relying on that either...  I have to come up with a new method as we're off to Mexico for a week next week and the swing is not coming with us (also I'd like to break this habit!)

Re: How do you put LO down for a nap?

  • Our routine has changed a lot in the last month or so, but right now, when she starts yawning I swaddle her, close the blinds in her room, turn on the humidifier and white noise machine, put her on my shoulder and do the bounce/sway. It takes no longer than 7-10 minutes for her to fall asleep. I try to put her down in her crib as her eyes are closing..that way she sees that she is in her crib, and it allows her to fall asleep while she is in the crib, rather than on my shoulder. I have to say that this would not work when she was 1 month old- but she also wouldn't sleep in a swing- every baby is different! Have fun on your trip!

We just swaddle DS, put music and a fan on, and offer a paci. He falls asleep on his own.

  • I wait until he start to yawn and then swaddle him.  I go to his room and sometimes I then bounce/sway until he is almost asleep before putting him down slightly awake.  Other times I just put him in his crib.  He usually then falls asleep on his own.  Some times he will fuss after about 5-10 min, so I will pick him up to comfort him and then put him down again.
  • If we're at home, I'll swaddle him, closed the blinds, turn on sound machine and either read to him or rock him until he's half asleep, then I put him down in his crib.

If we're out and about he'll usually put himself to sleep in his stroller or car seat.

    Have a great trip!
