Question for GD ladies

How long did it take you to get into a dietitian and diabetic counclor after your diag? I was diag last Thursday and I'm not seeing the diabetic counclor till Friday and then Nutritionist on Tuesday. They couldn't get me in for both appt. on the same day.

I'm  just a little frustrated. I am doing the best I can with my diet from the research I've done here and online but I ovb. have no idea if what I am eating is affecting my sugar.

I just feel like for a week to pass by with no clue is dumb.

Also how do you handle parties? I have a birthday party Saturday and a Christening on Sunday. How will I know what to eat?  Also should I just understand now that cake and icecream are just a big no right now? thanks!

Re: Question for GD ladies

  • It was a little less than a week, diagnosed on a Monday in with dietitian on Friday.

Parties are tough, I try to tackle the veggie tray first and fill up on that.  Once I'm full, which doesn't take long these days, I tend not to pick as much.  Do not deny yourself anything, just don't eat as much.  So take a few chips (like 4 or 5 chips).  If they are having a sandwiches of some sort, only eat half the bun, or no bun.  And have cake! For goodness sake have cake, just not the biggest piece.  If you are not testing yourself, you really can't know how what you eat will affect your sugar.  So eat everything in moderation and when you have your guidelines it will make it easier.

    Good Luck!

  • I went on Monday for my "diabetes education class" which was a video from the 70's and getting my prescription for my reader and strips. This was about a week after i was officially diagnosed. I have not met with a nutritionist yet. I called yesterday and got a voicemail so I left a message but have not heard back.

So far my numbers have been pretty good. I have tested 8 times and have only been over what my doctor wants me to be at once (and it was because of eating cereal for breakfast.)

As for your parties just try to stay away from high carb foods and when you do eat carbs make sure you are having protein with it. As for the cake and ice cream...I would probably have a small piece of cake and skip the ice cream. My shower is in a few weeks and I plan on having a small piece of cake especially if my numbers stay as good as they have been.

  • I guess I waited about a week to see a dietian. At the time of my test which I got the results right away I also saw the dr. He had me limit my diet to 30 carbs for breakfast and 30 to 45 for lunch and dinner, with only 15 for my snack between meals.

I would limit your carb intake for now.  Get used to looking a labels for carb content. If you do have carbs try to pair it with a protein.  As for the parties...you will probably be able to have cake just a very, very small piece with no icing(pure sugar).

Just remember you don't want a 10 pound baby, which I was told would happen if I didn't control my diet.

  • I was scheduled to meet with my dietician a week later, but missed my appointment due to a flat tire.  It ended up being two weeks for me.  I already had my meter and strips (given by dr) and my guidelines for 1 hr testing.  That made it much easier during those two weeks because I could see what my numbers were.

I always started with veggies and meat before eating the carbs.  This helped my body better deal with the carbs I ate.  I cut my carbs in half, and that really helped.  Instead of two scoops of mashed potatoes, I took just one.  I tend to over due my sweets, so I would check my number one hour later and if I was under, I would allow my-self a piece of pie, cake, or whatever.  If I was over, I skipped the desert.  My LO was only 8 lbs, so it worked well for me.

Don't worry too much.  Just be smart about what you eat.  More veggies, less carbs and sweets.  But yes, eat some cake!  It's a party!
