Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How many days do you wait to start a new solid?

How many days in between do you all wait to start a new solid food?  We started DS on oatmeal last Thursday and he loves it and hasn't had any problems w/ it.  I want to start a veggie of some kind tomorrow since it is a week later.  Should I wait a week all the time or just a few days?  Which veggie do you feel is best to start w/?  Sweet potatoes, green beans, peas??

Sorry so many questions!  :-/

TIA!

PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

Re: How many days do you wait to start a new solid?

  • For the first month or 6 weeks we waited about 3-4 days in between.  After that she seemed to have no problems with anything so we just started doing new foods whenever.  My suggestion is to start with the green veggies.  Megan LOVES sweet potatoes so we had no issue with her eating those.  But the peas and green beans took her a few tries to start liking them.

  • When we started with solids DD got 1/3 of a container of stage 1 foods. We started feeding only once a day so that jar lasted 3 days and we would switch to a new food. I felt ok doing this because both DH and I do not have any food allergies and neither dose anyone in our close family. DD has never had any problems. DD first veggies were Sweet Potatoes, Squash, green beans, peas and carrots. We tried them in that order.
  • I wait 3-4 days.  My side of the family has a lot of food allergies so I'm very cautious with this.

  • We always did and still wait 3 days if we start a new fruit (she has eaten all the veggies now). But the fruits can take a bit to get through!! But remember LO can still eat anything that they have already tried plus the new item (not saying you didnt know this but a mom posted asking about it) Good luck!

  • We started our LO on foods at 5 months. We wait 4 days between new foods. I make all of his food. We started with avocado (which he loves!), then sweet potato, then pears, now bananas. And we'll probably start carrots next.

  • We started at 6 months and wait 3-4 days between new foods.  We've only gotten through avacado, sweet potato and squash.  We're trying peas next (like pp said, I think this may be a tougher sell than the sweeter veggies, but we'll try).

  • We waited 4-5 days in between all stage 1 fruits and vegetables. My pedi said to start with the green vegetables first, then move to the orange vegetables, so I did. Fruit was the last thing that we gave her.

  • I waited a week when we started cereal just to get him used to solids before we tried anything else.  After that we waited 3-4 days between new foods.  We started with squash and did all the orange veggies first.  Then we did green veggies followed by fruit.  We started meat last week with vegetable turkey dinner.  The only thing he didn't like was green beans but he'll eat them if they're mixed with something else.

We EBF and started solids at 6 month too.

  • I wait a few days, certainly not a week.  I would start with the green veggies first, and sometimes it takes a few tries before you can really determine if they like it or not.  DS hated peas the first few tries, but now he loves them!

  • Also I dont know if this will help but I always use a side with LO's food. Like breakfast she gets oatmeal with a fruit then lunch and dinner she gets cereal with a veggie. I kinda mix them a bit and maybe thats why my LO hasnt rejected ANY fruit or veggie......or she is just a little piggy! Not sure. Everyone LO is different. I just feel like if I give her straight fruits esp she will love them so much and not want the less sweet items (ie peas and green beans).
  • We BLW. We don't wait between foods. If he seems interested in something, we generally let him try it. So far he doesn't seem interested in solids. That is, he's no more interested in them than in anything else.

He's had orange slices, apple slices, banana, green pepper, and tomatoes. I'm probably forgetting some other things. Oh, we started at 6 months.

  • We never ended up waiting with foods, we got to excite and went right into a routine of fruit in the morning and veggie at night - we have had no problems thus far and shes tried just about all flavors of food now
  • We like to do the introducing of a new food and since we both work FT, we start new foods on the weekend. We heard stories about LO not liking green veggies as much, so that's what we started with after cereal. Weird thing is she loves peas but doesn't like avocados! Huh?
