Anyone have a DC w. eczema?

If so, how did you/are you treating it?  My DS was diagnosed with eczema last week.  We were already using dove soap, free & clear detergent and luke warm baths, so the only new direction from out pedi was to slather him in aquaphor.  Well, the aquaphor has not helped and I'm not sure, but I think it made it worse.

DS is sleeping terribly at night (fusses, kicks and moves around all night long)  and I wonder if it's b/c he itches.  I have a call in to the pedis office, but she isn't in until tomorrow.  Any great products that helped your DC's eczema?  Also, if your DC had it on the head (cradle cap), what did you use for that?  We have used Head & Shoulders, but that didn't work.

TIA!

  • Sammy has bad eczema; he's on a perscription (Derma Smoothe).  We use All Free and Clear detergent and Dove sensitive bar soap.

  • Thanks for sharing, Darcy.  We use All Free & Clear and Dove Sensitive soap, too.  Hopefully, she'll prescribe something for him.  It just looks miserable.  Sad
  • I know what you mean.  The Derma-Smoothe smells bad (at least to me) but it works wonders.  You might want to ask your pedi about it if you really feel he's uncomfortable.

  • It took a while to get the aquaphor to work here.  I seemed to get worse and then magically... it all went away.  He's getting a little back, so we're back to using aquaphor twice a day or whenever I think about it during Diaper changes.
  • DS has it on his back. Aquaphor (Sp?) seemed to make it worse too.  Pedi suggested Eucerin creme but so far we haven't tried it.  Lansinoh Lanolin(you know for breastfeeding)  seems to help on his face so I will try it on his back I think.  Someone on here recommended that and it worked wonders on his face.  I was worried about him transferring lotion into his mouth with his hands.  GL

  • DS had eczema and I switched his formula to nutramigen and it went away.  He was allergic to the other formula he was on.
  • Funny you type this, my LO has his follow up meeting with a dermo this morning. We are doing all the same things as you, but aquaphor seems to make it worse like you said, we switched to Eucerin went seemed to work wonders.  The dermo prescrived an oilment to use twice a day as well.  I is getting better but not great. No miracle advice but good luck!  I thought it could be my diet since I'm BF but the dermo doesn't seem to think that's the case.
  • Thanks for sharing, Ladies!  I have very sensitive, dry skin so I already have some Eucerin on hand.  I will try that tonight at bath time instead of the Aquaphor.  I have been using the Eucrin on his legs and arms where he doesn't have the eczema, so I'll just try using it everywhere tonight. I also have Eucerin calming creme.  I'm thinking that might be good.  It is supposed to soothe very dry, itchy, irritated skin.

I will ask about the formula allergy, but I doubt that is the culprit.  DS has been on the same formula since he was one week old with no problems.  I think the eczema is a result of the weather change.  Seemingly overnight it has gotten cold and dry here.

  • I saw a derm for T's eczema...he was no help, said it probably wasn't diet related, "babys just get rashes" and to slather him in steroid cream.  I wasn't comfortable with that, so I did some more research.  Turns out it absolutely was diet related!  I eliminated the items he is sensitive to (wheat, tomatoes, bananas, peanuts, oranges, coffee) from my diet and the rash cleared up almost instantly.
