Parenting after 35

18 Month Stats

So Mr. Aaron has slowed down...  75th percentile for both height and weight.

He was 27 lb 9 oz and 33 inches tall (grew 1 lb and 1/2 inch since November).

I asked my pedi about the slow down and he was fine with it.  His height has fluctuated since birth, percentile-wise.  From 50th to 75th to 80th to 90th and back to 75th.  Weight curve slowed but is steady.  My pedi is OK with the no milk as long as Aaron is taking yogurt 1x per day and eating cheese (mac & cheese OK).

As for speech, apparently my pedi is more laid back re: this.  I asked about where he should be and basically all I was told is that if he doesn't speak in 2 word sentences by 21 months to call for an appt.  Aaron's next appt. isn't until he's 2, in six months. But what they're looking for is an increase in vocabulary more than an amount of words or sentences. I'm not really worried, but DH was a bit concerned.

Otherwise he's healthy. Teeth (14 now) are good. Eyes. Ears. Lungs. All good.

He had 3 shots (Polio, DTP and Hep A) and was a trooper.  He barely cried--was more pissed off--and ripped the bandaids off his legs. lol

Re: 18 Month Stats

  • Good to hear that the stats are good.  '

It seems that every ped has a different idea of what kids should be saying when.  I did a quick search and found this web site https://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/voice/speechandlanguage.html#mychild.  It is from the National Institute of Health which is a pretty reputable group.  According to it, a child normally only says 8 to 10 words by 18 months.  If you scroll down there are pop up check lists for each age group.

  • Great stats! I'm going to check out Vanverth's link, but first want  to add my .02 about not worrying about A slowing down size-wise. I think it just happens as they start moving more and slow down from the huge newborn-toddler spurt. M was 90th-9th percentile his whole 1st year but is now 50th and 75th in weight and height. That's a big drop but makes sense as neither H nor I are 95th percentile full-grown.
  • They do slow down as they approach 2 yrs old. Adrian is still pretty heavy but he seems to be slimming down a bit, it looks like he's growing taller now vs. wider. Although he's still big and going towards size 6 diapers and 2T clothing. He does drink about 20-24oz of whole milk daily, plus cheese, yogurt and other foods. I personally think the milk helps with bone growth but it could also just be that both DH and I are tall, so it makes sense that A will be tall too, with our w/o whole milk in his diet. Have you tried re-introducing milk to Aaron or does he not like it anymore? And please don't take my question as judgement, I'm just curious :)
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • Aaron likes how milk tastes, he'll just only drink it in a spout sippy if I'm holding it like a bottle. So I just don't give it to him. It's a lot of effort for him to drink maybe 2 oz,

  • Great news all around! I wouldn't worry about the words. Our pedi just asked if she was able to say 6 words - which of course she can, many more...

Sarah is 25 lbs and 33.5 inches, 60th and 95th percentile. That makes sense as DH is 6'4" but lean.

  • Sounds like Aaron is growing well! What a trooper with the shots. Geez, 3 at 18 months? I was kinda hoping there were none, or maybe 1.

I'm dreading Robby's 15 month appt tomorrow. Not that any kids like shots but, Robby is really anti-doctor/nurse/office building/elevator.....

  • I wonder if the shot schedule is different for each pedi?  I mean I read about some kids getting the MMR vaccination at 12 months, but Aaron got his at 15 months.  But the shots he got were the last for a while?though he's apparently getting blood tests at 2 years (but no shots).

Mikey  got the MMR at 12 months and also got blood work and a urine sample done. He only got 1 shot at 15 but 3 at 18 months. I'm losing track.

  • Nice appointment!!! They do slow down at about that age. There isn't a huge difference in sizze between an average 2 y.o to 3 y.o, not like the differrence between a NB and a 1 y.o, or even a 1 y.o. and a 2 y.o. It's more of a developmental difference.

That sounds a lot like M's vac schedule. She has not done well for any of them. It's brutal.

I wouldn't worry about the sentences. He'll put it together and when he does it will be like a flood gate opening. All the sudden it'll be "DawgCasey sit, Dere Elmo/LaLa/Daddy/Mommy, More milk, etc.! Maddie's (and my) favorite is "sit bum!" and patting the couch when she wants us to sit down.

    Kari - I bet Robby doesn't like doctors/shots/nurses! I wouldn't either I I were him.
